TEHRAN, Iran -- The Iranian justice minister chided the United States on Wednesday for its role in putting Saddam Hussein on trial, claiming that Washington wanted to forget that it sold weapons to the former Iraqi leader during his eight-year war with Tehran.
And, on the first day of the former ruler's trial in Baghdad, Iran's Foreign Ministry restated concerns that the charges against the 68-year-old Saddam did not include his aggression against his eastern neighbor.
"The occupiers (the Americans) just want to execute him without clarification of their role in supporting Saddam when he was in power," Justice Minister Jamal Karimirad was quoted as saying by state radio.
Karimirad said a petition filed Tuesday through diplomatic channels asked the court to charge Saddam with crimes from the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war, such as his use of chemical weapons on civilians.
