CNN: Royals (Charles and Camilla) visit New Orleans (including 9th Ward)
Royals visit New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana -- Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, flew into New Orleans on Friday for a brief glimpse of the ravaged city and a chance to meet a few of the hundreds of thousands of residents whose lives were turned upside-down by Hurricane Katrina.

After an airport ceremony to greet their flight from Washington, the couple went to the impoverished lower Ninth Ward, which was all but obliterated when water breached one of the levees that protected the city.

Standing atop a patched 20-foot levee, they shook their heads in disbelief at the destruction: splintered homes, chunks of concrete, overturned cars. The couple also met residents and rescue workers.

Tommy and Gloria Jones, who lost their house in the disaster, presented Charles and Camilla with a gift of a Mardi Gras doll and a picture frame.

Later, at a stop in the French Quarter, a woman presented Charles with a baseball hat emblazoned with "Bring New Orleans back." Another gave him a string of Mardi Gras beads which he wore over his blue suit....

is much closer to Christianity that gwb's "compassionate conservatism".

Charles, whose Foundation for the Built Environment charity is helping fund reconstruction projects, said he planned "to meet some of the brave and resilient people trying to rebuild their lives and to pay tribute to the astounding efforts of emergency workers."

that he wasn't much for royals, but he'd been impressed with the places Charles and Camilla have chosen to visit in the U.S.

compassion and concern for the hurricane victims than gwb could ever manage in a hundred years. MKJ

Notice the two people in "Uniforms" look like Corp of Engineers or other military engineer types, behind them look like safe people. I do not see anyone with sunglasses (A sign of being Security for the last 30 years for no one see where the guard is looking thus have to assume the guard is looking everywhere). No one expected the royals to go alone, the issue is would bush go to the Ninth Ward WITHOUT security.

6. I'm sure that Bush "winked" at them
you know, like that "Ahm gonna sell you a CAR before you walk outta here.." kind of wink thing he does, and said,

"Hey, you know what would be a LOT of fun? How's about I get my Dad's big old Cigar Boat down here and we could open a few of them valve dohickeys and get some Speedos on and WaterSki THROUGH the French Quarter?!

Won't that be a Kick? We don't have to get drunk or nothin'- I got some kickass PILLS now - and just to be safe we won't let none a them pazarrapis with cameras go chasin' Camilla - Pickles, didn't we have a Hurricane called thet? - anyways, so Camilla don't get squashed and bleed over over my Dad's boat like your last wife did.. maybe you jest had her kilt cause she was humping that Egypt guy?

Come over here by me Prince ol' pal.. Listen, I get to see Pickles necked all the time, but here's your chance to join the Bolton Club and get a eyefull of Pickles all C O L D (elbow to the ribs) in her suit, and Camilla ain't the Dog I kept hearin' she was.. we can get her some spandex and flood some a thet ocean water to get them stipples 'nikin' out, know what I mean? (head bouncing)

Pickles! You up for some waterskiing down the French Quarter? Now, you're gonna have to back off on the meds that's got yer eyes all bulging out like my Ma's - everyone's makin fun of that picture.. which reminds me, did BIG EARS give you a Christmas "Goose" a little early? Was thet why you was buggin' your eyes? Cos, y'know I CAN declare war on them just as easy.. they didn't get the message when I went to the Queenie's house last time and backed my golfcart all over her roses..

You may be a Prince BIG EARS - by the way, WE got a Prince right here in 'Merica too, tho he's one of them colored boys and can't sing a note to save his soul - but like I was sayin' you may be a Prince kinda guy back there in Engeland, but here in 'Merica Ahm KING OF THE WORLD, hyuck-hyuck-hyuck..

Got any coke?... nevermind, I got plenty, and just like Elvis ahm keepin' the world safe from drugs by takin' them ALL before they hit the street (knee slap)..

You just say the word BIG EARS and we'll be pullin' up to one o' them 'drive up drunk' windows they got here in New Orleans - or as Cheney likes to call it now, 'New Halliburton'.."

7. Who's guarding these two fokers? State is broke...
I would feel better if they made a huge contribution, stayed the hell out and got the hell home. None of those religous nuts would attend a celebration of Prez Clinton because he's an 'adulterous.' Yet Charles gets the royal treatment. Charles is a worse adulterous than Prez Clinton. He married a young woman just so that he could breed beautiful children and not those ugly royals, and never gave up his hag mistress.

10. God... textbook "Madonna" and "Whore" post here.
Charles and Diana's marriage was arranged, they both knew that. Diana was NOT under some delusion it was a love match, and she knew what the royal life was like -- she had grown up around it.

He was far from a perfect husband, but she could have divorced him if she wished, but chose not to. She also took lovers. Both were wrong in what they did.

And, Camilla is not a "hag." She is a very handsome older woman. Very derogatory sexist term here for DU.

And, re: Clinton. The people of the Ninth Ward would have attended any celebration for Clinton -- what religious nuts are you talking about????

Charles does a lot of charity work, alot of it with his own money, and gives his time to many, many causes. He isn't a saint, but he is also not some evil guy.

26. It was far more complicated than you are making out
Diana was the innocent party. And, for looks, Camilla cannot hold a candle to Diana. I don't think that she is "handsome", either.

18. You need to read some English history, friend.
Diana knew what she was getting into--it's a tradition as old as the moon. Diana was a virgin brood mare, nothing more, nothing less. And she did that spendidly. Her mistake--and it was an easy mistake to make at 21 or whatever she was at the time--was to imagine love had anything to do with it.

Charles loved Camilla, first and always, and if he and C. had had their way, they would have married back in the 60s, had a brood of kids, and that would have been that.

But Camilla wasn't Royal brood mare material (she had--gasp--already lost her virginity when she and Charles met) and so the Queen declared her unsuitable, and Charles had to go along with Mummy or create another crisis similar to the Wallis Simpson mess in the 30s.

But like somebody said once (and in Merrie England, no less) All's Well That Ends Well. Is there any doubt that William will be a splendid king?

And yeah, I'm a Royalist. What with the BFEE, Diebold, et al., I don't see a dime's worth of difference between the two systems these days. It's painfully obvious that the Royals are far more enlightened and civilized (and truly democratic) than the cheap thugs who've hijacked this country. Can anyone here truly claim that our system is superior to Canada's?

God (or whoever) save the Queen...

15. That is the least acceptable form of bigotry. The prince is in New
Orleans to help the people. It is obvious from the article that he is donating money through his foundation and that he is concerned for the welfare of the citizens. He has no obligation to travel to NO or to provide personal funds to the city. Why are you bashing him for his charity? How much have you donated and how much has George donated after he let our own citizens die and drown while he played? At least Nero took the opportunity of the burning of Rome to make better construction and better organization of avenues and etc. Nothing Stump does ever comes out better.

23. I agree.
The British royal family saw their own capital reduced to rubble during WWII. King George and Queen Elizabeth, and Charles's mother, Queen Elizabeth II, spent countless hours putting in "face time" in the devastated areas to encourage the people not to give up the fight. The princesses Elizabeth and Margaret and other members of the royal family worked as mechanics, nurses, etc. They rolled up their sleeves and tried to help, or at least to encourage, and that is exactly the tradition this visit carries on.

Charles is not a boorish dolt; he is a well-educated and extremely civic-minded person--say what you will about Diana, Camilla, and his private life, which we all so strongly decry the Republicans for using in trying to bring down Bill Clinton. Yes, Charles is a rich prince and future king, but he has an established record of giving a shit. I wish our own royal Bush family did.

28. Very well put Lisby...
I myself am pretty impressed that the Royals made it down to Louisiana at all. And if you think about it, they technically made it down there faster than Bush did. Took him a whole week, and they've only been here a few days! They also went to the WTC to honor the Britons that were killed on Sept 11th. My hat's off to them for taking the time.

37. Also...
Charles is a good friend of Al Gore. They have many similar interests. Personally, I am glad that Charles and Camilla are finally able to be together. It is a testament to "true love". I married my true love 30 years ago, so I'm a "softy" about this couple. I believe Charles is basically a good man and Camilla is a lovely, educated, caring woman. His children like her too. I wish them well.

in Charles family - I remember seeing a photo of Queen Mary visiting the troops in the hospital during WWI. This is a value that we in the United States would do well to learn.

21. did Charles give the 9th ward any money or help? or did he just

have a look and say 'what a shame'?

at the end of his tour he will gaze upon the homeless in San. Fran.

will he leave any money or help there? or just take back snapshots for his holiday album?

it's bizarre that part of his tour is visiting the homeless. he is supposedly here to prop up tourism in Britain. do the homeless tour Britian?

29. He's done more than that...
He pioneered Organic farming at a time in the 80's when such ideas were viewed as frankly strange. More recently he has set up an organic farming company that donates 100% of its profits to charity.

Sure, he was lucky enought to be born into a privileged position, but he's used that position for good and not to line his own pockets. He's made plenty of mistakes and is far from perfect one the whole though he's a better man than many.

he's actually very concerned about the environment, and I'm glad he has now been able to marry the woman he really loved all along. (And I suspect that all the people calling Camilla a "hag" or otherwise disparaging her looks are young guys who are still at the superficial stage of judging all women by their appearance.)
