Martha Stewart Posts Quarterly Loss
It's all down the pan for Martha since her foray into creative stock selling of Sam Waksal's dodgy drugs company:

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (MSO.N: Quote, Profile, Research) , the lifestyle empire built around style maven Martha Stewart, on Thursday posted a quarterly loss as its core brand took a hit from the legal travails of its founder. The company posted a third-quarter net loss of $3.8 million, or 8 cents a share, compared with a net profit of $2.8 million, or 6 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue fell to $51.2 million, from $70.9 million a year earlier.

Analysts on average forecast a third-quarter loss of 14 cents per share, according to tracking firm Reuters Research, a unit of Reuters Group Plc.

The company forecast earnings for the fourth quarter in a range of roughly 5 cents to 7 cents a share. That compares with analysts' average forecast of 3 cents a share, according to Reuters Research.

Stewart is to go on trial in January on charges of obstructing justice in connection with a stock trading scandal.

2. that bums me out
While I agree that what she did was wrong, it pales in comparison to Ken Lay and I don't hear any trial dates...oops even arrest dates for that jerk yet.

Also...I am an admirer of Ms Stewart and her products. She created a company that creates jobs and its a "fun" kind of company. One that focuses on making life a bit more enjoyable through crafty things etc... (note I am not crafty)

And...much to my delight I bought a Martha Stewart cast iron furniture set at KMart last year and it was MADE IN AMERICA...I was shocked...and realize that may be a fluke but it is cool.

4. oh I agree but I bet Jack Welch has been guilty of the same kind
of stuff but for some reason no one goes after him...in fact if I recall he got a really cushy retirement program that seemed a bit over-the-top but that got swept under the rug after he declined using some of the perks....

As crafty as Martha may appear the really crafty ones don't get caught.

As a personal note I think that society has a problem dealing with smart ambitious women....

Women that make money through exposing their breasts or pimping themselves to the camera are more acceptable than a woman who uses her intellect to achieve financial success.

5. No one goes after Jack Welch because his wife's just cleaned
him out in the divorce courts. But don't lose hope that he may be next on the list.

Women who've actually 'used their intellect to achieve financial success' usually keep their wealth (and their intellect) pretty low key so as to actually carry on keeping it!.....
