Mayor Bill White wins over 90 percent of vote (Houston Dem)

Bill White got the mandate he wanted, re-elected Tuesday with more than 90 percent of the vote, and now he has to deliver.

His second-term priorities — addressing the city's air quality, encouraging volunteerism, increasing the city's affordable housing, expanding the police force — are broad themes not likely to create much controversy.

Selling the specifics, though, could be contentious.

No strife was evident Tuesday, however, as White took the stage at his downtown victory party to the sounds of the Rolling Stones' Start Me Up.

He was awesome in Katrina taking the refugees and getting barely any credit plus in Rita!!! Ya gotta love him!!!

7. White won 2 years ago against a guy that George & Barbara campaigned for.
He's done such a great job that he had only token opposition this time. And Bill White is an avowed Democrat -- he served as Deputy Secretary of Energy in the Clinton administration.

One thing I've noticed in the last few years in Texas politics -- the Republicans are increasingly fundie and weird, and the Dems are moving further and further to the left.

The Houston area repeatedly has elected Tom DeLay, but also Sheila Jackson Lee. I can't think of one Democratic congressman from the Houston area who is not True Blue Dem.

And Chris Bell is going to run for governor! He can beat Good-Hair. I'm not so sure he can beat Strayhorn -- she's been the biggest thorn in Perry's side for the past few years.

9. i've always wondered about the selection of some songs for political use.
i mean, "Start Me Up" contains the following phrase, shouted out twice in very clear fashion (not that i care at all...):

You, you make a dead man cum
You, you make a dead man cum

10. Enron & DeLay country
I know spectrum's are relative, but it seems if anybody with a (D) after their name can win in TX, that & the big fat NO we just gave arnie here in CA, the (R)'s better take notice. Anyways good work Texas now all we have to do is find our collective voice and we should be Okay.
