GOP Tax Plans Meet Obstacles in Senate
WASHINGTON - Republicans started advancing their tax-cutting agenda through the Senate with lingering questions about whether the GOP has enough votes to win support in the tax-writing Finance Committee.

GOP Sen. Olympia Snowe (news, bio, voting record) of Maine, a moderate whose vote is pivotal, has not said whether she will endorse the cuts at the committee hearing on Thursday.
....
The proposal would keep in place, through 2009, tax cuts for capital gains and dividends, which reduced the top tax rate to 15 percent. That is one year longer than currently scheduled, but a year less than many Republicans wanted.
....
Sen. George Voinovich (news, bio, voting record) of Ohio, another Republican moderate, said he will vote against tax cuts because budget deficits are too high and the economy does not need stimulation through tax reductions right now.

"It is time to recognize a simple fact of life," Voinovich said. "Contrary to what some of my colleagues seem to believe, tax cuts do not pay for themselves."

Whaaaaaaaa?

4. No, he is an old-style Republican -- fiscally conservative.
He was reelected in '04 and won't face another election 'til '10. He seems to be relatively honest (compared to Frist, say) and has problems with the way this Republican administration and Congress have raised the deficit. He is the one Republican who opposed Bolton's nomination in Committee although I think he abstained from voting in Committee which allowed the nomination to move to the floor.

7. You're right - and I've lived in OH God since 85 - and I remember
Voinovich having a hissy fit because he didn't feel like driving the 2 hours from Cleveland to Columbus and ordering a pilot to take off from Hopkins airport to fly him to Columbus. (V was governor at the time).

After the flight, the pilot was likely to lose his license due to Voinovich's tantrum - there are restrictions about flying around Air Force One - and Voinovich was in legal hot water.

Also, when he was fined, he tried to turn around and have the taxpayers pay his fine. After that, public opinion was rather nasty, and he ended up paying it, with egg on his face.

But back in 1991, he didn't seem to mind GHWB41 coming in and tying up traffic all around because Bush wanted to throw some shindig in downtown Cleveland. V was mayor of Cleveburg then.

And don't forget about Paul Voinovich, George's (late) brother, who had some pretty shady dealings that the media seems to have swept under the rug, despite the fact that the media allows every Tom, Dick and Harry who walked past Bill Clinton and committed some minor offense to be portrayed as his political bedfellows . . .
