(AP) House GOP Seeks Quick Vote on Iraq Pullout
House Republicans sought a showdown Friday with Democrats on a proposal by one of their most senior members to force an end to the U.S. deployment of troops in Iraq.

Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., offered the resolution demanding a pullout. The GOP-run House was expected to reject it — and make a prominent statement about where Congress stands on Iraq — as the chamber scurried toward a Thanksgiving break.

"We'll let the members debate it and then let them vote on it," said Rep. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., the acting majority leader.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's office had no immediate comment.

3. Interesting timing, no?
They decided to do this when Bush is out of town. I thought that was a little bit coincidental. Maybe not.

Hard to tell. Either way, Bush and his cronies have got a fight on their hands. I want to see them get out there, 24/7, fighting with the Dem's about this war.

Also, it's going to be interesting to see what kind of statement the GOP makes regarding Iraq. This could be a trap for them....

4. Dems will cave yet again
And vote NO... Take that to the bank.

If they really do it, then they deserve to be in minority for a decade.

7. Exactly. If they can't see by now what a terrible disaster this Oil War
has been, they deserve to be in the minority or lose their jobs for sucking up to the status quo with their weak knees knocking like an old Ford diesel engine.

13. well, I think if it fails it will set the stage
for the "mod" repugs to agree with "mod" dems that yeah, pull out, but not quite so abruptly. So I am very hopeful that even if it fails on a party-line vote (likely) that it will be the start of more bi-partisan efforts towards moving forward to pull out.

Either way--it's a HUGE step by the Dems to be able to provoke the repugs into even putting this on the table.

Remember they control the congress and they don't have to entertain this debate, and they wouldn't be doing it at all except for all the pressure and the falling pols.

I have no time for messages from people using DU for a parasitic promotion of their socialist party with less than a year until the next election.

Take this to the bank!

5. Bring it on
But be sure the vote is on Murtha's proposal, not the Republican "improvements" The slime balls. They don't want a vote on the actual, original proposal. They want to muddy the waters to their advantage. Confuse and disperse. Catapult the propaganda. Sustain the Republican culture of corruption.

8. Of course they do. Get the dems to vote for the war again,
before the grassroots can take advantage of Murtha and pressure them. Then Bush can keep on using the Democrats as a shield against criticism.

9. Every Dem should vote to withdraw IMMEDIATELY! If it passes, it's...
because the Republicans ALSO voted to pass it. They outnumber the Dems in the house and their arm-twisting and vote time period extending tactics ensure they get their way.

10. If the democrats had guts, this could pass.
As there will be a number of Republicans voting for it, such as Ron Paul and Walter Jones.

12. EVERY Democrat that votes against this. . .
should face a primary challenge. There needs to be unanimous support of Murtha on this.

24. Drudge says the vote is tonight?
On his page Drudgey has busted out the red text:

GOP to Dems: Pull Troops Now? Okay, then let's vote...
Troop resolution Tonight; hitting the House floor between 5:45 and 7:45...
Ultimate showdown...

Haha, so the vote is tonight? The Republicans are trying to put a period at the end of the Iraq debates in Washington now. How about we put it to a national referendum instead, or better yet just call an early election.

16. the smartest things the Democrats can do is ignore the vote
the wording of the resolution is designed to put whoever votes for it in the worst light....

H.Res. __

Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the deployment of United States forces in Iraq be terminated immediately.

Resolved, That it is the sense of the House of Representatives that the deployment of United States forces in Iraq be terminated immediately.

....not even Murtha is asking for immediate redeployment of troops. The resolution is just bait to make Democrats look weak. Let the Republicans vote on it alone and recommit themselves to this disaster of a war.

Edited on Fri Nov-18-05 04:35 PM by Marie26
My sense is that this is a trick, too. Are they voting on both Murtha's & the Republican proposal at the same time?

20. Yes, it is a stunt
and every one of the Democrats can just stay in their offices for the votes, or abstain. Let the Repubs fall in their own trap.

22. if Democrats vote yes, the resolution will still be defeated
There are not enough votes for it to win (maybe in 2007 when the Democrats win both Houses!). And the Repubs will accuse us of being defeatists and extremists. So voting for it would just play in the Repubs hands, in my opinion.

I wish this war was over yesterday. But this isn't the way its going to happen. This vote is just a way to stick it to the Democrats.

18. Blunt simply is showing he can play hardball, he's the boss now.
He wants to inflict real psychological pain on those across the isle. "Don't mess with our machine" is the message "we still run things. Look what I can do to you in a New York minute." It's also an opportunity for more brave dems to step up, I cannot say courageous dems, because that time has long past.

It's right now, on record, on film, and do you have the guts to to see it used against you in an campaign commercial this election cycle. This can win and lose seats in districts on both sides, and maybe yours

Right now every politician is asking themselves "how fast is the war tide going to turn, and how hard? And if support for the war spirals to the 20's? Whens the right tme to bail?" The ice is so thin. But it's thin on both sides of the lake.

Republicans are gambling that 'patriotism' is a more valued commodity than 'common sense,' and that in fact 'patriotism' is always 'common sense.' Red america can still be insulted by 'cut and run' cowards. It's a dangerous game for everybody. This is how serious the animosity in Washington has become. These are politicians and they well know the points aimed at them right now are sharp and real.

In everyone's life there are times for courage, lets hope we witness some soon.
