Republicans Refuse to Honor Springsteen
Nov 18, 6:01 PM (ET)

By DONNA DE LA CRUZ

WASHINGTON (AP) - Bruce Springsteen famously was "born in the USA," but he's getting scorned in the U.S. Senate.

An effort by New Jersey's two Democratic senators to honor the veteran rocker was shot down Friday by Republicans who are apparently still miffed a year after the Boss lent his voice to the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry.

The chamber's GOP leaders refused to bring up for consideration a resolution, introduced by Sens. Frank Lautenberg and Jon Corzine, that honored Springsteen's long career and the 1975 release of his iconic album, "Born to Run."

No reason was given, said Lautenberg spokesman Alex Formuzis. "Resolutions like this pass all the time in the U.S. Senate, usually by unanimous consent," he said.

Telephone calls to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's office seeking comment were not immediately returned.

Lautenberg said he couldn't understand why anyone would object to the resolution.

"Even if the Republicans don't like (Springsteen's) tunes, I would hope they appreciated his contributions to American culture," Lautenberg said.

Springsteen endorsed Kerry last year, and made campaign appearances that drew huge crowds who came to hear music described in the resolution as "a cultural milestone that has touched the lives of millions of people."

20. My husand doesn't "get it" when I tell him that, and unless I'd seen
him live myself I don't think I would either.

I saw the Act For Change concert and he played with REM and had a cameo from Neil Young, it was awesome!

23. That's what did it for me too. My husband worshiped him and I could never
understand it, until he took me to see him live.
I still get chills thinking about it. Unbelievable live performer, unbelievable passion and musicianship. Simply unforgettable, and I've seen him twice since, same electricity every time.

The Republicans are so pathetic. They can't even see how petty and stupid it makes them look to not pass the resolution just because he didn't vote for them and campaigned for the other guy. They'd just be classless if they weren't criminals.

26. I'll have to take my husband as well. "Bruce" played for hours when I
saw him with a friend. I have never experienced that kind of energy at a concert - ever. I agree with your assessment - passion/perfection/showmanship. Amazing.

They'd just be classless if they weren't criminals.

LOL, indeed.

31. Yup. That'll make a believer out of you.
Growing up Jersey, I resisted the cultural imperative to be a fan for a while. Then a boyfriend took me to my first Springsteen concert -- '78, Palace theatre (I think that's the name) in Passaic, NJ.

OMG.

I've seen him many times since then, but I have to say that first concert was something really special. Kitty's Back, for one thing.

I'll stop going on and on now!

11. Reagan can no clue
that "Born in the USA" was an anti War (Nam) song. He thought it was patriotic.

I guess the Reps have figured that one out by now. Besides, the Boss the hardly a brain dead supporter of this administration.

ape-sh*t when "The Boss" supported Kerry? Boycotts, burning CDs, tears and feelings of betrayal. Idiots never paid any attention to the lyrics of the song beyond the chorus line.

The American people love Bruce Springsteen. If the Republicans are too stupid to figure that out they are even more deluded than I already credit them to be.

This only makes The Boss look even better. Tom Joad would be proud.

22. 1] Bruce is proud of this. it's a badge of honor for him to be rejected by
thugs. 2] this ensures that his music will no longer be desecrated by thoughtless thugs, and it creates enormous confusion for thug voters who love the Boss but want to toe the party line. 3] this is another form of censorship by the thugs, who love that sort of thing... and it makes clear to their wavering base that they're truly out of touch with reality.

this is good on so many levels that i'm grinning from ear to ear. all the thugs can do is shoot themselves in the foot... it's as if they can't unholster their guns but their fingers are glued to the triggers and the safety's off.

It's not like Bruce needs the recognition. Anyone who knows music and American culture knows the impact he has had.

They just need to punish him for seeing a whole lot more clearly than they do, or than they want others to see.

As I expect sales of the latest will show.

The point isn't Bruce's need -- the point is how very silly and petty these GOP folk can be.

I sincerely doubt he was home crying after not receiving the honor, you know?

Edited on Fri Nov-18-05 09:41 PM by socialdemocrat1981
Even though he didn't support either of them for the presidency, you'd think they'd be a bit more grateful to him

I'm sure Springsteen's devastated to know that a bunch of right wing partisan ideologues don't like him :sarcasm:

Why should we honor Ronald Reagan with anything - he was a Republican! If Democrats can't be honored than neither should Republicans.

No one who votes should ever be recognized, according to Republicans?
