Big Easy Couple Still Cooking for Troops
NEW ORLEANS - An old oak tree blown down by Hurricane Katrina destroyed the home of Jessie and Sherry Krummel. Looters took everything else.

But despite their misfortunes, the Krummels have been cooking dinner once a week since the beginning of October for soldiers and volunteers protecting New Orleans neighborhoods, paying for much of the food out of their own pockets.

"There's no way you can describe what they've done," said Maril Long, a Colorado National Guardsman. "To see someone that's still got their spirit, it makes it all worthwhile."

The guardsman departed for home Saturday after one last feast.

1. That is such a wonderful story....and another reason
we need to keep supporting and encouraging these citizens. . .

though I'm gonna sound kinda awful here. . .how many meals do you think Iraqis have cooked for the troops. . .I mean, isn't food flowing freely into the country now?

2. To be fair, I seriously doubt the Colorado National Guard was
sent to invade New Orleans, or to oversee the theft of its assets.

Maybe that is why they got such a good reception.

6. we wanted the guard here
their efforts to help & to maintain order at a difficult time were much appreciated

we are only sad that they weren't here earlier, in advance of the storm, as nat'l guard normally would be in advance of any hurricane

for some reason, *co decided to cheap out on us

rural mississippi was neglected too so it isn't even just a case of let's stab the democrats in the back, it was out and out diversion of our manpower & resources from the gulf coast to iraq

but certainly letting democrats die (new orleans voted overwhelmingly for kerry) was a big part of the motive of not sending troops in time, i'm confident

4. They are pretty brave to eat it
I could think of all kinds of things that could be done to such food, from merely gross to deadly.

5. wow -- look what she fixes --
''Krummel and a handful of volunteers cooked a Creole Thanksgiving dinner for the troops, complete with nine fried turkeys injected with a butter marinade. There was homemade dirty rice, beans with ham hocks and fried green beans, too.

"Appreciate what y'all are doing for us," Krummel told a solider while dishing out a scoop of sweet and spicy corn.''
