(Bush's) New plan won't protect St. Bernard, Lower Ninth or N.O. East
http://www.wwltv.com/local/stories/WWL121505levees.1278601a.html

The Army Corps of Engineers said the plan for improved levees that is being pushed by President George Bush is a good one for the areas where levees breached but will do nothing to protect the Lower Ninth Ward, New Orleans East or St. Bernard Parish.

“The authorized level for this project does not resist the Katrina storm in these areas,” said Don Hitchings of the Corps.

The plan calls for closing off the levees at the London Avenue, Orleans Avenue and 17th Street Canals by June 1, 2006.

1. Funny, isn't that where the poorest live???
What, are they supposed to pull themselves up by the boot straps and do it on their own? Somebody here said it, but I'll repeat it again: "What if they're too poor to afford boot straps?"

2. Three-part plan ...
(1) To help boost the economy in NOLA and its environs, let's temporarily move the White House to New Orleans.

(2) For security reasons, let's remove all good citizens from the area around the newly-constituted White House.

(3) Once steps (1) and (2) are completed, let's pray for another hurricane.

15. You two are too clever, too damn smart
Bush can't outwit you at all. I too had my doubts that Bush was actually proposing something GOOD for the country or any part of it aside from his "base" (aka: the have's and have more's). Of course, his other neat trick is to promise and then not deliver.

Either way, the poorest, most vulnerable people of NOLA were bound to be left behind and screwed one more time, no matter how fine sounding the words and promises.

5. WTF? Are these assholes for real?
They really are trying to gentrify NO. Morph it into a sterile, plastic imitation of what it once was. We can't let them do this!

6. What would protect at least St. Bernard and Lower Nine: Fill in MRGO
MRGO = Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, a shipping canal dredged straight though the coastal marshes so maritime interests along the Intracoastal Waterway could have access to the Gulf without a more expensive widening of the lock at the Industrial Canal. It is believed to have acted as a superhighway up which storm surge from Katrina barreled and slammed straight into the levees "protecting" St. Bernard Parish and the Lower Ninth Ward, overwhelming them.

Even a November Times-Picayune editorial called it "MR-GONE" and recommended that it be filled in before something like this happens again. Not sure what if anything this would do for N.O. East, but c'mon, if I had all the answers, I'd already be back in as the rebuilding czar, right? :-)

9. As did San Francisco -- but there's a catch
The largest area of fill in SF is the Marina District. Remember the Marina District? From the '89 quake? Oh yes, Boston is also subject to quakes on occasion; not as frequently as SF, obviously, but still... the whole Back Bay and much of the South End is built on fill. :scared:

Also it takes 10 to 20 years before you can build (safely) on new fill.

16. Someone should begin an
ad attack on Bush for lying. Not only to the people of the gulf coast but to all americans. His words that could be used again him are the following: "And tonight I also offer this pledge of the American people: Throughout the area hit by the hurricane, we will do what it takes, we will stay as long as it takes, to help citizens rebuild their communities and their lives."....."There is no way to imagine America without New Orleans, and this great city will rise again,"...."a faith in G-d no storm can take away...."one of the largest reconstruction efforts the world has ever seen."
