Gonzales: Spying Covered by Force Authorization
(Must hear interview, Gonzales is in serious trouble if this is all he's got to defend his actions.)

Gonzales: Spying Covered by Force Authorization

by Michele Norris
Audio for this story will be available at approx. 7:30 p.m. ET (at link above, or 7:08ET/5:08 MT on your local NPR radio station.)

All Things Considered, January 24, 2006 ·
Congressional authorization to use force in the war on terrorism
allowed the Bush administration to engage in
electronic surveillance, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales says.

Although Congress did not specifically mention domestic
spying in the measure, it's a necessary part of the
military effort to fight terrorism, he says.

(Unfortunately, this is a "must hear" interview that will be replayed at about 7:10pm on your local NPR station or about 7:30pm for on-line streaming. Al is REALLY going to be in trouble, when he sits down in front of the Senate, if this is the best arguments he can come up with.

NPR's Michele Norris is not known for being a tough interviewer, but she had little trouble making Gonzales' argument sound VERY foolish in this interview: <http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5170875>

This interview is well worth hearing as a preview to his impeachment hearings (are Attorney Generals Impeached?)

Also: Here's a link to his "Prepared Remarks for Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales
at the Georgetown University Law Center, January 24, 2006
: <http://www.usdoj.gov/ag/speeches/2006/ag_speech_0601242.html>

I haven't read them yet, but I heard it's a lot of BS arguments.

1. That's the most fucked up thing I've ever heard.
Will these people stop at nothing to justify their lawlessness? I'm sorry, but I am so damn angry I can hardly stand it anymore. :grr:

3. Everyone knows it's bullshit.
Congress specifically withheld authorization to use force in the US, and on top of that wiretapping is not a use of force. They are fooling NO ONE.

2. Kerry said on This Week the authorization absolutely does NOT cover it.
Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 06:05 PM by blm
And I would say Kerry has more experience as an honest lawyer looking at evidence than Gonzales has. Gonzales is always looking for ways out for his master Bush and desperately relies on political spin over the letter of the law.

5. They're flushing what's left of their credibility down the toilet.
Going on record with something as grotesquely false as this isn't going to help them.

7. The Blame Anyone Else crowd strikes again.
This time it is Congresses fault? Just another lame fascist excuse for illegal spying on fellow Americans.
