Democratic Leaders Push 'America Competes'
WASHINGTON Jan 24, 2006 — The United States will "spiral downward" and may not recover in a fast-changing global economy without urgent investments in education, health care and alternative energies, Democratic governors said Tuesday.

"We're getting the living daylights kicked out of us," said Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell.

Rendell, finance chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, said the United States is falling behind China, India and other nations on education, health care and the race to find alternatives to oil. In addition, he said unfair trade practices are shipping U.S. jobs overseas.
....
The Pennsylvania governor said money should not be a roadblock for a federal government that paid for the war in Afghanistan, the war in Iraq and hurricane relief in the Gulf Coast.

"When the Congress and the president need to find money to spend, we find it, right?" Rendell said.

1. Rendell is right. America is quickly falling behind.
If we do not invest resources into our future, we will have no future.

2. Republicans are spending it all on "privatized" military, prisons,
and corruption.

The republican party, which is deeply entrenched in ALL branches of government, doesn't give a rat's ass about "we, the people", or our kids, or their future. Hell, they don't even care about our Constitution! They don't care if you burn a copy of the constitution -- just don't let 'em catch you burning a copy of the flag.

5. I don't mean to throw cold water on this idea or concept,
since I'm also a democrat, but wouldn't it be nice if we could transcend the "compete" paradigm and replace it with "cooperate"?

So often competition just pits us against each other, whereas, cooperative comes closer to our natural state of being. I guess capitalism always seems to get in the way, capitalists always want to drive us harder, work us more hours, be smarter (more education--the implied meme is we're stupid), etc. Those, for me at least, are dead ends used by tyrants to manipulate us and what we do.
