Knight Ridder Newspapers

AKRON, Ohio - If an Ohio lawmaker's proposal becomes state law, Republicans would be barred from being adoptive parents.

State Sen. Robert Hagan sent out e-mails to fellow lawmakers late Wednesday night, stating that he intends to "introduce legislation in the near future that would ban households with one or more Republican voters from adopting children or acting as foster parents." The e-mail ended with a request for co-sponsorship.

On Thursday, the Youngstown Democrat said he had not yet found a co-sponsor.

Hagan said his "tongue was planted firmly in cheek" when he drafted the proposed legislation. However, Hagan said that the point he is trying to make is nonetheless very serious.

Hagan said his legislation was written in response to a bill introduced in the Ohio House this month by state Rep. Ron Hood, R-Ashville, that is aimed at prohibiting gay adoption.

1. Get the statistics on how many Repug/Fundie parents
abandon or mistreat their gay children. If roughly 10% of people are gay, this would suggest a rather high percentage chance of some growing up to be mistreated or abandoned by their adoptive/foster parents.

BTW, another effect it would have is, if any of the RWer's began to support the bill or law, all their Republican Daughter's would start registering as Democrats!

Boy would that be fun to see.

7. My favorite part of the petition:
"adopted children raised in Republican households are more at risk for developing "emotional problems, social stigmas, inflated egos, and alarming lack of tolerance for others they deem different than themselves and an air of overconfidence to mask their insecurities."

I love Bob Hagan. Though he's certainly pandering, he's pandering to me.

11. Sure it is!
Anything like this that puts the spotlight on these people, exposes them for who they are and holds them up to ridicule furthers our cause.

Ridicule is a poweful rhetorical device- one which the far right has used very effectively for a long time.

If the Dems had the good sense to have clued in on this fact- and used the tactic themselves against these wingnuts years ago, we wouldn't be in the predicamnt that we're in today.

19. Love it! - but I think the point will be lost on the GOP
they will see this as an attack on republicans and still defend their crusade/attacks on GLBT as justified and righteous. They won't see what they do as an attack - but will call this measure an attack. Totally blinded in their hate.

20. Child abusers seem to almost always be straight Republicans
How do I know? That's the majority of the population where I live, and when there are reports of child abuse, abandonment, torture, etc., the parents are always straight, and more than likely Republicans. I never hear about a gay couple treating their child in this manner.

So, I guess Republicans feel that a baby is better off being born to parents who didn't want it, and don't want it, then subjected to a life a hate, abuse, and pain as opposed to - GASP! - allowing that child to be loved by a gay couple.

One only has to look at our President to see what happens when someone isn't brought up properly...

To further lampoon Hood's bill, Hagan wrote in his mock proposal that "credible research" shows that adopted children raised in Republican households are more at risk for developing "emotional problems, social stigmas, inflated egos, and alarming lack of tolerance for others they deem different than themselves and an air of overconfidence to mask their insecurities."

I can't believe the Democrats don't do more of this. There is SO much material provided by the GOP to ridicule that it's almost maddening that the only people who usually take advantage of it are the comedians and political cartoonists.

The Dem strategy should definitely include using humor more often to appeal to the sensibilities of the average citizen.
