Two Senators Seek Special Prosecutor for Abramoff Ties
WASHINGTON — Two Senate Democrats are calling on Atty. Gen. Alberto R. Gonzales to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate lobbyist Jack Abramoff's activities in two Pacific island territories.

In a letter made public Thursday, Sens. Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico and Ken Salazar of Colorado also asked Gonzales to provide the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee with a secret Justice Department report on security risks in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Bingaman and Salazar serve on the committee, which has oversight of the island territories.

Abramoff, who has pleaded guilty to tax, bribery and conspiracy charges and is awaiting sentencing, bragged in a 2001 e-mail to his clients in Saipan that he would use his connections in the attorney general's office to block the anticipated report lest it fuel congressional efforts to place new immigration restrictions on the Northern Marianas.
.....
The letter to Gonzales also calls for the special prosecutor to investigate Abramoff's role in the demotion of Frederick Black, the former acting U.S. attorney for the two Pacific island territories. The demotion came at the same time Black had launched a probe into the secret hiring of Abramoff by Guam court officials. Payments to Abramoff were channeled through another lobbyist.

1. 31 Dem Senators have signed a letter for a special prosecutor
They are: Akaka Baucus Bingaman Boxer Cantwell Clinton Dayton Dodd Durbin Feingold Feinstein Harkin Inouye Jeffords Kennedy Kerry Landrieu Lautenberg Levin Mikulski Murray Nelson (FL) Obama Pryor Reed Reid Rockefeller Salazar Sarbanes Schumer Stabenow.

This letter was released to the media on 2/16 and reads as follows:

The Honorable Alberto Gonzales United States Department of Justice 950 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington, D.C. 20530

Dear General Gonzales:

As you know, we have previously called for a special counsel to ensure the public's confidence in the investigation and prosecution of those involved in the corruption scandal surrounding Jack Abramoff's dealings with the federal government.

In the same vein, however, we believe that public confidence can only be assured and that the appearance of conflict can only be avoided if you recuse yourself from overseeing the investigation and the prosecution of this case.

First, in light of your previous service as White House Counsel and your close connection to many Administration officials, the appearance of conflict looms large as the investigation has potentially widened to include Administration officials. FBI officials have said the Abramoff investigation "involves systemic corruption within the highest levels of government." Indeed, one White House official, David H. Safavian, the White House's top procurement officer, has already been charged with wrongdoing in connection with Mr. Abramoff's dealings with the federal government. Furthermore, as reported in the media, in confidential e-mails recently sent by Mr. Abramoff himself, Mr. Abramoff met President Bush in "almost a dozen settings." This latest revelation comes on top of other news reports that Mr. Abramoff also organized at least one and possibly several meetings with White House staff for his clients.

These meetings with the President and White House staff occurred while you were serving as White House Counsel, in which capacity you were also the White House's chief ethics advisor and enforcer. Therefore, given the possible ties between Mr. Abramoff and senior government officials with whom you are familiar and to whom you may have provided legal advice, you will avoid the appearance of a conflict if you recuse yourself now.

Second, recent precedent militates in favor of your recusal. As you may recall, in December 2003, when presented with a similar situation involving a widening investigation that threatened to implicate individuals within the White House, former Attorney General John Ashcroft recused himself. General Ashcroft's recusal then quickly paved the way for James Comey's appointment of Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald to take over the Valerie Plame leak investigation. That investigation, of course, has been widely praised for its independence and integrity.

Given the expanding scope of the investigation into the Executive branch, public confidence in the process will be ensured only if you recuse yourself. Along with the appointment of a special counsel, your recusal would assure the public that no political considerations will be a part of this investigation or subsequent prosecutions and also make certain that no conflict of interest will impede final resolution of the investigation.

We know you share our commitment to restoring the public's trust in our government. We hope you will take the most appropriate action here by recusing yourself and endorsing the appointment of a special counsel so we can guarantee that justice is done while preserving the integrity of the Justice Department.

We look forward to hearing from you on this matter soon.

Sincerely,

Akaka Baucus Bingaman Boxer Cantwell Clinton Dayton Dodd Durbin Feingold Feinstein Harkin Inouye Jeffords Kennedy Kerry Landrieu Lautenberg Levin Mikulski Murray Nelson (FL) Obama Pryor Reed Reid Rockefeller Salazar Sarbanes Schumer Stabenow.

8. If the Repo rank-and-file ever find out how the GOP sold them out
Edited on Fri Feb-24-06 11:54 AM by donkeyotay
they are going to be so pissed. Abramoff doing bidness with the Russians and the Chinese, bringing the wickedness of gambling to use to catapult his power, utterly undermining the democratic process and corrupting the Republican party. If this scandal ever gets told, which is doubtful, it will be the mother of all corruption scandals.

I wonder who this fine specimen is: "Abramoff boasted that a top aide to then-Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft..."

I would also note that despite the vague wording here we are talking about POTUS:

The senators noted that after Black was replaced, the Abramoff probe came to an abrupt end. They also stated that because the allegations directly involved current and former Justice Department officials, an outside prosecutor was necessary to ensure a full and impartial investigation of the matter.

9. Let us hope it is that dreadful
Barbara Comstock person that they are referring to when they say:

"I wonder who this fine specimen is: 'Abramoff boasted that a top aide to then-Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft...'"

In her latest incarnation she's heading up Scooter Libby's legal defense fund, and according to one item I read she is not just a fundraiser, but may actually be calling the shots on defense strategy.

In the 2000 Florida recount debacle, she's the one who hired all attorneys to stir things up down there.

In previous times, campaign staffers and party operatives would have handled their side of things.

Don't let her ineffective and annoying voice fool you. She's hard as nails.

11. You may have seen her on Crossfire
if you watch CNN.

I didn't take her seriously, because her voice was no match for whoever she was arguing with.

You could tell she was a mouthpiece for bushco, but I had no idea then that she was so influential.

At the time she as identified as just a spokesman for John Ashcroft.
