MONTPELIER, Vt. --Democratic congressional candidate Peter Welch called Friday for the firing or resignation of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, calling him "the face of failed policies in Iraq."
"Rumsfeld's leadership has been characterized by bad judgment, arrogance and a refusal to listen," Welch, the president pro tem of the state Senate, said in a statement. "It is time for Congress to set a new course and a new direction."
In the months before the Iraq war, Welch said, Rumsfeld:
-- Ignored intelligence that did not support the need to go to war;
-- Joined others in the Bush administration in misleading Americans about an alleged connection between Saddam Hussein and the Sept. 11 attacks and by saying Iraq had weapons of mass destruction;
-- Brushed aside cautionary advice from U.S. allies, choosing instead "to forge ahead with a near go-it-alone approach."
