Supreme Court Justice Champions Hunting (Scalia: Hunted w/Dick & Lived)
Sunday February 26, 2006 9:31 PM

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia fondly remembers carrying a rifle around New York City as a boy and says outdoorsmen should attack the idea that guns are only used for crimes.

An avid outdoorsmen who's hunted with Vice President Dick Cheney, Scalia spoke Saturday at the National Wild Turkey Federation's annual convention.

``The attitude of people associating guns with nothing but crime, that is what has to be changed,'' Scalia told the audience of about 2,000.

``I grew up at a time when people were not afraid of people with firearms,'' said Scalia, noting that as a youth in New York City he was part of a rifle team at the military school he attended.

``I used to travel on the subway from Queens to Manhattan with a rifle,'' he said. ``Could you imagine doing that today in New York City?''

2. Goering loved hunting too
I saw that on a History Channel show today. It doesn't mean hunters are necessarily fascists, but perhaps fascists are necessarily hunters.

I know, it really doesn't mean either thing. I just wanted to mention Goering along with Scalia.

12. They do both make use of the same hyper-masculine imagery
So, I think there are some symbolic parallels, although one doesn't want to stretch that very far.

And are "afraid" of firearms for good reason.

I live in the deep south. I only know one person out of my large group of friends and family who hunts. Only a couple of them keep a gun in their home for protection. Two of the brothers of the one who hunts, fell asleep in deer stands, fell out and broke their spines.

Guns are the "tools" of criminals and stupid people.

6. Dunno where you live, but almost everyone I know here owns guns...
including my wife and I (who are neither criminal nor stupid). Nationally, about 80% of gun owners are nonhunters, though, including us.

7. I hunt
I used to do a fair amount of it. An intiative had the result of killing the California deer herds, so I stopped for a while. Been hunting here in MD. Very different from out west.

We eat everything we take, nothing stuffed and hanging on a wall. For meat eaters, its arguably a more honest way to feed the family.

10. I'm in the south as well... Bastion of the Verile Hunter and other
stereotypes borne of the ignorant.

Like you, I know very few people with guns or who feel that if they don't have one, their daughters will be raped and their hard earned goods stolen.

Frankly, most of the people I have met or know who are avid gun "hobbiests" fall into the mire of people I have known who are a "few bricks shy of a load."

9. NEW YORK CITY???
Try carrying a rifle around any city these days, and if you survive, you deserve the involuntary commitment you get.
