Bush says his beliefs unshaken by poor poll numbers

http://today.reuters.com/News/newsArticle.aspx?type=politicsNews&storyID=2006-03-10T181356Z_01_N10296043_RTRUKOC_0_US-BUSH-POLLS.xml

Bush says his beliefs unshaken by poor poll numbers

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Down in public opinion polls, President George W. Bush said on Friday he realizes he has made some unpopular decisions but that it "comes with the territory" and he will stand by his beliefs.

"I know some would like me to change, but you can't be a good decision-maker if you're trying to please people. You've got to stand on what you believe, that's what you've got to do, if you're going to make decisions that are solid and sound," he said.

During a question-and-answer session with a national newspaper group, Bush became his most animated when talking about the way he handles his job.

A year into his second term, Bush is beset with a job approval rating below 40 percent, with Americans disapproving of his handling of the Iraq war and the U.S. economy.

11. classic wet brain
Street term for cerebral edema brought on by excessive drinking. Often occurs in aged alcoholics. The condition is caused by excess of fluid - either intracellular or extracellular - sloshing about in the president's skull.

As there is nowhere for the fluid to go, it exerts pressure on the cerebral cortex and/or interacts with the cells of the brain in various ways. Symptoms vary, but in old drunks, this generally causes a state of permanent apparent drunkenness - perhaps the brain responding to the intrusion in its most comfortable pattern.

17. Merriam-Webster would call them "delusions" I think
Definition of delusion (2b) from Merriam Webster:

"a persistent false psychotic belief regarding the self or persons or objects outside the self."

Bush's persistent false psychotic belief: that he is fit, morally or intellectually, to lead this country. That God loves him more, and that is why God caused him to be born into a family of empire-building fascists, and to be "chosen" as a front for a neo-con coup.

He is surrounded by enablers of this delusion. It's no wonder he finds it so "unshaken."

Americans coming from the west; Soviets coming from the east.

His country in ruins, from the 'Leader's Bunker' the commander-in-chief will not order his troops to surrender, because: ""I know some would like me to change, but you can't be a good decision-maker if you're trying to please people. You've got to stand on what you believe, that's what you've got to do, if you're going to make decisions that are solid and sound."

----------
Bush disdains "trying to please people." I always thought that in a democratic republic, that is was what it is all about.

He admits it: only needs to consult his gut
This is wrong--doesn't he know this?? He makes decisions based on his beliefs--but that isn't what he should be doing!!

He has no use for facts or intelligent advisors. He'll listen to them if it's what he wants to hear--if it agrees with his gut.

Also--major Flip-flop: he said he thinks Al Qaeda is our biggest threat. At the debates, he said nuclear proliferation was.

Iran--NOW he wants to use diplomacy and work with our allies! Why didn't he think of this earlier, say mid-2002??

On No Child Left Behind--he just doesn't understand the problem. This one goes way over his head. All he knows are the broad outlines of the problem--what a simpleton.

Did you notice the condesending attitude? He thinks we don't understand and he does! He thinks that if we would just understand, we'd agree with him!!!!

I have to go lie down and recover from an overdose of the chimp!

39. The Gambler
On a warm summer’s evenin’ on a train bound for nowhere,
I met up with the gambler; we were both too tired to sleep.
So we took turns a starin’ out the window at the darkness
’til boredom overtook us, and he began to speak.

He said, son, I’ve made a life out of readin’ people’s faces,
And knowin’ what their cards were by the way they held their eyes.
So if you don’t mind my sayin’, I can see you’re out of aces.
For a taste of your whiskey I’ll give you some advice.

So I handed him my bottle and he drank down my last swallow.
Then he bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light.
And the night got deathly quiet, and his face lost all expression.
Said, if you’re gonna play the game, boy, ya gotta learn to play it right.

You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when you’re sittin’ at the table.
There’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealin’s done.

What part about being a public servant does he not get?

Where do the "people" fit in to his role, except to be talked down to.

Principles can guide you in making objective fact based decisions, and when the facts change, so can the decisions. In Bush's world, his beliefs are immutable and impervious to any facts (e.g. Iraq, Global Warming,...; the list is endless).

56. President Bush: Flip-Flopper-In-Chief
Edited on Fri Mar-10-06 04:35 PM by Disturbed
President Bush: Flip-Flopper-In-Chief
September 2, 2004

From the beginning, George W. Bush has made his own credibility a central issue. On 10/11/00, then-Gov.

Bush said: "I think credibility is important. It is going to be important for the president to be credible with Congress, important for the president to be credible with foreign nations." But President Bush's serial flip-flopping raises serious questions about whether Congress and foreign leaders can rely on what he says.

1. Social Security Surplus

BUSH PLEDGES NOT TO TOUCH SOCIAL SECURITY SURPLUS... "We're going to keep the promise of Social Security and keep the government from raiding the Social Security surplus."
...
BUSH SPENDS SOCIAL SECURITY SURPLUS The New York Times reported that "the president's new budget uses Social Security surpluses to pay for other programs every year through 2013, ultimately diverting more than $1.4 trillion in Social Security funds to other purposes."

2. Patient's Right to Sue

GOVERNOR BUSH VETOES PATIENTS' RIGHT TO SUE... "Despite his campaign rhetoric in favor of a patients' bill of rights, Bush fought such a bill tooth and nail as Texas governor, vetoing a bill coauthored by Republican state Rep. John Smithee in 1995. He... constantly opposed a patient's right to sue an HMO over coverage denied that resulted in adverse health effects."

...CANDIDATE BUSH PRAISES TEXAS PATIENTS' RIGHT TO SUE... "We're one of the first states that said you can sue an HMO for denying you proper coverage... It's time for our nation to come together and do what's right for the people. And I think this is right for the people. You know, I support a national patients' bill of rights, Mr. Vice President. And I want all people covered. I don't want the law to supersede good law like we've got in Texas."

...PRESIDENT BUSH'S ADMINISTRATION ARGUES AGAINST RIGHT TO SUE "To let two Texas consumers, Juan Davila and Ruby R. Calad, sue their managed-care companies for wrongful denials of medical benefits ‘would be to completely undermine' federal law regulating employee benefits, Assistant Solicitor General James A. Feldman said at oral argument March 23. Moreover, the administration's brief attacked the policy rationale for Texas's law, which is similar to statutes on the books in nine other states."

3. Tobacco Buyout

BUSH SUPPORTS CURRENT TOBACCO FARMERS' QUOTA SYSTEM... "They've got the quota system in place -- the allotment system -- and I don't think that needs to be changed."
...BUSH ADMINISTRATION WILL SUPPORT FEDERAL BUYOUT OF TOBACCO QUOTAS "The administration is open to a buyout."

4. North Korea
BUSH WILL NOT OFFER NUCLEAR NORTH KOREA INCENTIVES TO DISARM... "We developed a bold approach under which, if the North addressed our long-standing concerns, the United States was prepared to take important steps that would have significantly improved the lives of the North Korean people. Now that North Korea's covert nuclear weapons program has come to light, we are unable to pursue this approach." <PRESIDENT'S 02 15 11 Statement,

...BUSH ADMINISTRATION OFFERS NORTH KOREA INCENTIVES TO DISARM"Well, we will work to take steps to ease their political and economic isolation. So there would be -- what you would see would be some provisional or temporary proposals that would only lead to lasting benefit after North Korea dismantles its nuclear programs. So there would be some provisional or temporary efforts of that nature."

5. Abortion

BUSH SUPPORTS A WOMAN'S RIGHT TO CHOOSE... "Bush said he...favors leaving up to a woman and her doctor the abortion question."

Georgie's been known to get VERY upset when confronted with bad news, i.e. anything that doesn't fit his smug little "reality".

That poor aide is probably nursing a black eye (if s/he hasn't been fired already, in a fit of pique).

58. He does not care about poll numbers
he is getting his agenda through the rubber stamp legislator. He has no need to care. If he actually had to face a check and balance, he would care. If he actually had to care what the people wanted he would be concerned with poll numbers, but he does not. He has loyal repugs doing his bidding in congress so he does not need to care. If he had to explain to congress and the people his policy's, he would care. He never said that his ideas are good for the country, but he did say he would not get anything done if he worried about pleasing people. He does not care about anybody but himself. I think if they lose the House and Senate in Nov. there will be a boat load of recess appointments and the last 2 years will be a lot of crying by poor abused little George.

69. Take Social Security Privatization
CLEARLY the people did not want this, yet Bush continued to push for it, and slipped it into another bill, AGAINST the will of the people. If that is not a clear cut example of his "the hell with you" attitude, nothing is.

Yes, he want to be a DICTATOR. What the people want doesn't matter to him. Only his POWER.

71. Policy is supposed to be based on fact not belief
If policy could be sufficiently grounded in belief alone, there would be no need for notice and hearing, due process, a multiparty system, or representative government.

Fact finding as a basis for policy is a fundamental basis for representative government.

If policy and government decisions were to based on beliefs, we should just let the clergy or a party of dictatorship run our nation.

If belief is the guiding principle, then there is no need for a first amendment, and its concommitant marketplace of ideas, because differing policy alternatives, no matter how rational, mean nothing, because nothing can compete with a belief.

Chimp faith in beliefs is obscurantist claptrap by a dictator betraying our constitutional system.

Why should we put ANY reliance on these polls given the state of the MSM today?

And from a theoretical perspective, do we really want someone who "governs by polls?" Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's right.

95. Oh, he cares.....
Bush cares GREATLY about his numbers. That's what these people are all about: image, molding public opinion, showmanship, PR, publicity stunts 24/7. That's their lives. These people don't govern; they campaign. Several of them have advanced degrees in media; they've worked for the TV networks. These guys are pros.

Everything to them is a PR event. Katrina? A wonderful opportunity to show off Bush, with his shirt sleeves rolled up, holding a hammer.

No one can imagine the desperation, the despair that these "image crafters" are feeling right now. They've failed dismally. No matter what they do, Bush's numbers slide further into the toilet like a big turd.

....They had such crappy material to work with...
