Reid 'Ashamed' Over Katrina Mobile Homes
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060312/ap_on_go_co/katrina_reid_1

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Senate minority leader Harry Reid said Saturday he was "ashamed for our country" after visiting the thousands of FEMA-owned mobile homes lined up at Hope Airport that have yet to be used as shelters for hurricane victims on the Gulf Coast.

"I can't imagine that we could have a sea of 11,000 mobile homes sitting there, rotting, while people around the country can't find a place to live," the Nevada Democrat said.

Cost estimates for the trailers have ranged from $350 million to $800 million.

Earlier, at Little Rock, Reid also said he was galled by Bush's suggestion last week during a visit to New Orleans, where many neighborhoods remain uninhabitable, that Congress was slowing down the recovery process.

Reid said that, if President Bush had presented a budget that included what would realistically be needed to bring Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and Alabama back from the disastrous conditions they were left in after hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Congress would now be approving funding amounts that would meet those needs.

1. Maybe we need to
start using the FEMA trailers as an anti-* icon.

5. After the 2000 election debacle, one of the USSC justices...
Edited on Sun Mar-12-06 12:28 AM by DRoseDARs
...stated that President Bush's name would have an asterix ( * ) next to it in the history books. An asterix used in such a manner indicates there is some sort of special note or further information being provided about that subject elsewhere in the book. In Bush's case, well, just think back to the 2000 and 2004 elections and Bush's dubious wins in both... in fact, now we can use two **'s next to his name.

Anti-* or anti-** = Anti-Bush, anti-Bush*, anti-Bush** etc.

6. We don't even like to say his name -
so many of us just use * in place of *. See, I can't do it. Can't type out his horrid name. Just like I can't look at him on TV or hear his voice. Makes me want to :puke:

11. * = bush. When he is written into the history books his name
Edited on Sun Mar-12-06 08:22 AM by vickiss
will have the asterisk next to it due to him being appointed by the Supremes in 2000, rather than being duly elected (as I understand it). Someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Many of us here use * to represent the idiot as a sign of complete disrespect. I use it.

Welcome to DU unda cova brutha! :hi: :toast:

In hope of peace,

16. It comes from baseball
In 1927, Babe Ruth hit 60 home runs in a 155-game season.

In 1961, Roger Maris hit 61 home runs. He hit the last one in the 162nd game of the season.

Babe Ruth was a baseball icon at the time. Doing something better than he did was a Bad Thing--Ruth was supposed to be the best baseball player who ever would live. And obviously if Ruth would have had 162 games in his season, he could have gone long more than 61 times in 1927. So it was decided that Maris' 61 runs would be entered into the record book, but with an asterisk beside them to show that it took him more than the 155 games Ruth had to get there. IOW, that it wasn't the "real" record. (Because obviously we're supposed to conveniently ignore the fact that nothing is ever supposed to change in baseball.)

We honor this tradition today by using an asterisk to denote George W. Bush. Some Midwestern university (the University of Chicago, if I'm not mistaken) went to Florida after Bush was in office and used that state's Sunshine Law to demand access to the ballots cast for president in the 2000 debacle. They recounted them and announced that under any scenario which counted every ballot cast in that election, Al Gore received more votes in Florida than did George W. Bush. As we remember, this state decided the election. Since that time, we've been treated to a long-running display of tastelessness, arrogance, and one felony every seventy-two seconds.

2. What nobody is mentioning is the storage costs on the trailers
I have a friend who leases a field to Clayton Mobile Homes for their overstock and they pay around $1k a month for a space that holds about 20 homes.
I can't even imagine the storage fees on 11,000 homes.
Utterly insane waste of money.
The homes should have been delivered to the lots without stopping.
They have already paid the toter to deliver them once, now they will pay another $700-800 to deliver them somewhere else. I guess they don't give a flip when they are spending someone else's money.

7. what a coincidence -- i'm ashamed of harry reid
Edited on Sun Mar-12-06 07:49 AM by bedazzled
another bush-enabling lap dog who calls himself a democrat. it's nice to know that there is a level of negligence and criminality that will motivate him to speak out. too bad it's thousands of unnecessary deaths and untold numbers of homeless people to get him to open his mouth

the lot of them should be screaming to high heavens about the endless atrocities perpetrated by this administration. one can only assume that, since they let them get away with it, they also are reaping the benefits

8. I am proud of Harry Reid for Visiting NO and making these comments
What it clear is that Harry has been fighting for us, but the media does not communicate his message. With Bush's ratings so low, and people so upset about Katrina, the media is letting his words out.

What is important is that Harry is speaking out and his message is being delivered. Not sure why one would complain about that.

13. i know this
i think that the response to katrina aid and the clean up effort has been an insult to the victims and their families, and also to the entire country! they basically thumbed their noses at americans who were drowning or dying because of dehydration, starvation and disease.

i also know that they sifted the ashes of the world trade center to find dna to identify the victims. in NO they want to bulldoze the houses to make sure the bodies are never discovered.

i'm just saying it's nice of harry reid to notice that there are still folks without homes. maybe he can be more proactive in the future.

i'm not one of those who thinks that doing the right thing occasionally should be optional, and says "well, he's TRYING." at this point, we need to get someone in their who has a spine (dream on)

i know there are those here who won't criticize any dems, and will call me a freeper because of my low post count. i visit DU a lot. don't post much, but i'm not a freeper

21. Welcome to DU, bedazzled, and of course you're right. It's long
overdue for ANY politician to be embarrassed by this debacle, and the Dems in Wash don't get a pass either. Just saying you're embarrassed don't cut it - get the damn job done no matter who is in charge, and if you can't, scream bloody murder, don't just say you're embarrassed, say you're MAD AS HELL AND YOU'RE NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE.

19. Seems like they might could look at the hotel vouchers
that they have been paying and match up homeless people...
or research the food stamp rolls...
or any number of ways to match up the homeless folks.
My guess has always been that they are trying to figure out how to give these homes to their croneys so they can rent them to the hurricane survivors.
We need more billionaires...:sarcasm:
