Former congressman, veep candidate says GOP needs to expand base
Associated Press

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Jack Kemp, a former congressman who was Bob Dole's vice presidential running mate 10 years ago, says Republicans need to expand their base to maintain control of Congress and the White House.

Kemp, who went into politics after a career as a pro football quarterback, spoke Monday at the University of Kansas as part of a lecture series at its School of Business. He also spoke at and toured the university's Dole Institute of Politics, named for the former Kansas senator who lost to President Clinton in 1996.

Kemp said his party should take cues from the current debate over illegal immigration as well as the racial and social implications of Hurricane Katrina to reach out to people whom he said the party has often isolated.

He termed Republican policy on immigration a "monstrosity" and "embarrassment." A House-passed bill includes provisions making illegal presence in the U.S. a felony and requiring fencing along 700 miles of the 2,000-mile border between Mexico and the U.S.

4. That's what the immigration bill is doing.
Register Republican and you can be a citizen. No lines, no test, no waiting.
