Sen. Clinton hosts Casey fund-raiser
By Carrie Budoff
Inquirer Staff Writer

Hillary Clinton lends her fund-raising strength to Democratic Senate candidate Bob Casey Jr. today, hosting an event for him - in Chicago.

Despite their differences on a key issue - she favors abortion rights, he opposes them - Sen. Clinton (D., N.Y.) has emerged as a generous supporter. The former first lady and potential 2008 presidential candidate gave more money to Casey in 2005 than to any other candidate. Her political action committee, HILLPac, donated the maximum allowed by law, $10,000, records show.

The afternoon event at Chicago's Palmer House Hilton, Clinton's first for Casey, is a sign of Pennsylvania's importance in the Democratic Party's bid this year to gain control of the Senate. Casey holds a comfortable lead over Sen. Rick Santorum (R., Pa.) in the polls, but the senator has a 2-1 fund-raising edge over his leading challenger.

When asked why the campaign chose to do the event in Chicago, Casey spokesman Larry Smar said it was "nothing out of the ordinary." Clinton will be in Chicago today to deliver a speech at the Economic Club of Chicago.

1. the infinite wisdom of the democrats, couldn't support a pro-choice person
Spector is the other Senator and he is pro-choice. Santorum has self-destructed, it wasn't anything the democrats did, and they could have put a pro-choice liberal and still had a 10 to 15 point lead. For me a woman's right to choose is extremely critical, and if the democrats continue to cloud the issues where they stand on these key issues such as abortion or the Iraq war, then what do we stand for. Roe V Wade is already close to being reversed.

6. that may be, but my argument still is that it is more because of

santorum than because of casey

no one else was given a chance. This was very similar to what they did with Paul Hackett. Incidently, the situation in Ohio is just the oppostie. It will be a miracle if Sherrod Brown wins, and yes I hope I am wrong, I hope brown wins, and even casey, though if I was in Penn, I could never vote for him because of his position on choice

I am so thankful I live in California, though I must admit the people in California also allowed Schwarzenegger to get in, but that was more to Davis pandoring and the MSM giving schwarzenegger more credibility then they should have

2. This is the first I heard of her giving anything to Casey at all.
The last I checked on donations through Hilpac, I saw nothing for Casey. Anyway, it is good of her to do this even if it is in Chicago and not in PA. I wonder if she is there to raise money for herself also.
