Santorum among GOP's vulnerable
Santorum among GOP's vulnerable
Pennsylvania senator target for 6-seat swing

By Jill Zuckman, Tribune national correspondent. Tribune national correspondent Jeff Zeleny contributed to this report from Des Moines
Published April 24, 2006

BLUE BELL, Pa. -- In the Centre Square firehouse, surrounded by firefighters in their starched dress blues and a bright red firetruck parked at an angle, former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani tried to turn Sen. Rick Santorum's brash, hard-edged demeanor into a softer sort of asset.

"When he tells you what he thinks, you know it's coming from his mind and his heart and his conscience and you know he's not just telling you what you want to hear," Giuliani told the supportive crowd in this politically crucial Philadelphia suburb.

But Santorum, the Republican junior senator from this politically divided state, is facing his most difficult re-election ever, due partly to an uncontrollable desire to speak his mind and partly to an unpopular president and an Iraq war seemingly without end. Of the 33 Senate races this year, the Democratic challenge to Santorum is the nation's marquee contest--promising big money, prominent visitors and a referendum on President Bush's policies.

"There are a lot of eyes on the state to see if he becomes a well-known casualty of the president's diminished public standing in Pennsylvania," said Christopher Borick, director of the Institute of Public Opinion at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa.

2. The Rpigs in PA are breaking out their trusty "marriage-protection act"
just in time for the election. Santorum needs that. Without it, he is done.

3. Hell, they're doing EVERYTHING!
If it were ONLY the MPA, that would be pretty normal, but when you see them sending in Rudy to help Ricky, you KNOW it's panic time!

From everyone I've talked to in Pa, Ricky isn't gonna make it!

I'll be celebrating BIG TIME even if I don't live there anymore!

7. I really love this line from the article where it
states he is vulnerable "due partly to an uncontrollable desire to speak his mind." That can be a bit of a problem when you are a complete loon.

8. Also interesting the GOP not backing Lynn Swann financially.
When Santorum goes down, he'll drag Lynn Swann with him. In the governor's race, Rendell has $15 million in his campaign fund; Swann only has $1.5 million.

9. Swann is a dunce. Good football player...unqualified to be Governor.
Unfortunately there are some here in Pittsburgh who may be blinded by the 'he was a Steeler' mentality...fortunately, Philadelphia could give a fat rat's ass about his Steeler background and their much larger population should trump any Steeler-fan votes out of Pittsburgh.

11. The thing that blows my mind is that there is a poster on DU
who has actually said he would vote for Swann because of the PENGUINS! Can you believe that? Swann was speaking to ministers in Pittsburgh last week telling them he doesn't support gambling at all--this two weeks after he stated which slots company he was supporting. Can he make up his mind?

Just because he was a Steeler doesn't mean I want him running my state. He and Santorum and Bush are all going to drag each other down.

13. Of course Swann supports gambling; its supported him for years.
The vast majority of professional sports fans gamble on the games - from pools in the workplace to the local bookie at the neighborhood bar. For all those out of shape guys who couldn't run a first down without collapsing, betting IS their sport. Most of Swann's viewers of his broadcasting job were gambling on the games he was describing. And he may not be very bright; he certainly is not educated about public issues or how govt. works; but he damn well knows he owes his living to gambling.

15. Ya, I know that poster.
All Penguins, all the time rants.:eyes:

As much as I love the Steelers and Pittsburgh sports, I am voting for the competent Governor...Governor Rendell.

10. Notice they are blaming everything on Bush*
It couldn't possibly be the people of Pennsylvania are just sick of Santorum and his hypocrisy and hatreds. The main thing about Republicans is they are never at fault for anything...Usually it is Clinton's fault or Liberals....
