Daschle to test the waters in NH
http://www.politicsnh.com/?q=node/250

Former U.S. Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) told the Associated Press today that he will visit Iowa, New Hampshire and Michigan next month to explore a 2008 presidential bid.

Daschle has already visited Iowa at least twice in the past year, but this would be his first trip to New Hampshire.

Since losing his re-election bid in 2002, Daschle helped create the Senate Majority PAC, which has filed legal papers in the New Hampshire phone jamming case recently and has worked to helped Democrats take control of the Senate in 2006.

1. We don't need a resurgence of cowards.
We have more than enough still infesting the party.

Begone! Begone with you!

3. where do these politicians get the idea that they deserve to repeatedly
line their own pockets at our expense? I don't care what "side" of the aisle they are on. Once was enough. Thanks but NO thanks..

We need new ideas not more of the same.

21. That's what we were doing here. Sparing him expense & humiliation
What was objected to was not his right to run - of course he has the right. There is a sense of entitlement that some politicians have - regardless of how the base feels about them. THAT was the issue.

6. He's running for Secretary of the Interior, or a similar post, I suspect
He's got a lot of niche supporters, and he'll fart around for a bit, perhaps do a bit to advance the debate in specific areas, and ultimately throw his machine's prowess to the winner, and cruise to a cabinet job....

Take it from me, just flush your money down a toilet instead. Quicker, less heartache and probably more fun. Maybe you ought to think about running for something in, I dunno, South Dakota instead.

34. It's terribly obvious to me
that some of these people who decide to try on a presidential bid just don't "get it." Tom Daschle is one of them--and there are other perennial campaigners who think, for some reason that there is a possibility they could win. I suppose, after seeing the idiot in chief supposedly "winning" they see that their own chances are at least a slight possibility.

The problem is, some of these people are completely blind to their position in their party. Some of them also don't understand that reputation, name recognition and popularity DO play a major role in the campaign. If you look at either the 2000 or the 2004 races, you can see that those who were new in terms of fame were ultimately at the bottom rung of the ladder. Those who had a face and name that people could at least recall did much better.

On the other hand, Daschle is well known to those of us who have been following politics for at least ten years or more. In his capacity as Minority Leader, we watched as he folded time and time again in the face of opposition, and that ultimately it is his hesitation and silence which have pegged him as a weak representative. It is surprising to note however, that his state is largely red, and that Daschle is one of the few Democrats to have actually been voted in. He was not a DINO, at least, but making concessions to red ideals and not standing up for the ideals that the left-wing is biggest on, helped to defeat him in the end.

If he runs, he will likely not get past the first couple of primaries or caucuses. People will remember his name, but he will be damaged goods to those of us who have been critical of his lack of conviction in the past. We've been able to identify those individuals whose moral fiber gives them a definite edge in responding back to the reich wing attack machine. And even then, we will lose some of them as a result of their names not being instantly recognizable.

What it boils down to is this: those who have been courageous and those who are well known are the ones to watch for beginning next year. If we can find those who reepresent BOTH ideals, we will be able to identify those who are most likely our best bets for meeting the criteria necessary for a 2008 presidential win.
