Veterans of US prisons in Iraq in no mood for reconciliation
Veterans of US prisons in Iraq in no mood for reconciliation
by Sam Dagher

ABU GHRAIB, Iraq (AFP) - The lock opens and a heavyset man sporting a black knitted skullcap similar to that worn by the slain Al-Qaeda leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, leaves a cage at Abu Ghraib prison.

Saad al-Hayali, 47, was one of 500 detainees at US and Iraqi-run facilities in Iraq released at a ceremony on Friday, as part of a bid by Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to promote reconciliation and national dialogue among the country's feuding factions.

Maliki, who announced the initiative June 6, was to disclose details of his plan on Sunday.

But a conversation with Hayali and several others -- all Sunni Arabs locked up on suspicion of ties to insurgents -- quickly suggests they are not willing to forgive and forget.

Some may be even more determined after their prison time to take up arms against US and Iraqi forces.

11. It would my attitude...and has...and I've never experienced it
but even if a person isn't tortured and abused..to be locked away for no reason would cause a lot of anger...and rightly so.

but you just know we'll hear the "no one could anticipate" line from somewhere within the Bush Regime

I also expect to hear - they hated us before they were detained(in an attempt to dismiss the the man's anger and play down America's actions) ...or some variation.

3. The probability of anyone
locked up and "interrogated" for months and then hating us for generations after is a near certainty no matter how they felt about us beforehand.

8. Yup. Guaranteed cause and effect.
Now, whenever I was about to do or did a selfish, stupid, cruel thing, my mother would say, "How would you feel if it happened to YOU?" I do not believe Barbara Bush ever said that.

9. It's almost as if the administration wants war without end
after all, it won't be their tax dollars paying off the U.S. debt incured as a result of the various policy decisions that have led to this next century of protracted warfare. In fact, I'm sure endless war will pay handsome dividends to all of those "fortunate ones" who have wisely invested in the M.I.C. and B.O. Oh happy times, happy times.
