Harris takes back $100,000 from campaign to renovate home
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Katherine Harris gave her campaign more than $3 million to run for Senate, but then took back $100,000 to finish renovating her "historic home in Washington, D.C." her campaign revealed Friday.

The campaign said that the Republican congresswoman would sell the house, if necessary, to fund her embattled Senate race to unseat Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson. The decision was immediately questioned.

"I have never heard of a candidate taking money out of a campaign coffer like it's an ATM. It absolutely boggles my mind," said former Harris campaign manager Jim Dornan. "This is a woman who has completely lost touch with reality. You don't take your campaign contributors' money, whether it's yours or not, and spend it to renovate you house. This is absolutely insane."

The campaign announced Harris repaid some of the money she already gave the campaign in a press release detailing fundraising for the three months ending June 30.

Nelson's campaign manager Chad Clanton was almost speechless when he heard about the report.

40. DeLay took his remaining campaign money...
...and transfered it to his legal fund after he backed out.
I wouldn't have thought that ethical or within the law.
It appeared he continued to campaign to raise personal funds.

Barstool Republicans should certainly think twice before donating their hard earned money to these crooks without conscience.

you can choose to pay back the loan in whole, part or none.

My personal opinion? She never gave that 3 million in total as ANYTHING to her campaign. she just gave lip service to it (and with THAT closing thought...my mind went completely foul and I will stop now)

12. It is a big deal. Some contributors judge the viability of a candidate-
by the financial health of the campaign. (It also generates invaluable press) -So it's fraudulent for her to set her campaign up to look like there's lot of cash, and then dip back into it.

It's also a kick in the teeth to anyone who might have struggled to donate (if there ARE any repubs like that)

and earmarking it for her son's use but it's probably a charitable contribution and tax deductible, another GOP ploy that I think is really clever, combine camgaign with religious
efforts, that way all campaign contributions become legitimate tax deductions as charitable
contributions. I must admit, these individuals have every dirty scheme thought out.

Edited on Sat Jul-15-06 08:31 AM by soup
Guess she needs the money to remove the bats from the belfry...

>Harris talks in rapid Southern twang and at times seems to be fluttering an invisible Scarlett O'Hara fan. Unlike in Sarasota, where she regularly attends the poshest charity events, she says she purposefully hasn't made much of a social splash in Washington, eschewing the endless rounds of parties and galas in favor of weekly commutes home to her husband, Swedish-born businessman Sven Anders Axel Ebbeson, and weeknights spent at her historic Capitol Hill townhouse, The Owl House, which Harris is renovating. (“I care about preservation,” she says. “It's one of my passions.”)

Harris certainly makes it easy yet I wonder how this compares to other bitter campaign managers who usually trash the campaigns that didn't listen to them. Usually it is about bad choices and poor candidates but never such accusatory details. All the attention of course is focused on Harris and that is the norm. No one ever thinks about the ex-adviser at all. But Harris is making it easy and Harris' 'friends' in the Bush circle certainly do not mind at all.

38. everyone knows, the only donors who get refunds are racists and criminals
if you donate money and want it back, all you have to do is say something really toxic, then wait for the public backlash to insist that the campaign PAY YOU BACK!

this always struck me as a very peculiar practice. if someone donates money to MY campaign, then he turns out to be an active kkk member, i am NOT writing a check TO that kkk member! instead, i might donate it to the naacp, or some other suitable organization, but i'll be damned if i'm going to pay someone for turning out to be a rotten excuse for a human being.
