Dozens of Immigrants Found in Ariz. Desert

By CHRIS KAHN
The Associated Press
Wednesday, July 19, 2006; 12:41 AM

TONOPAH, Ariz. -- About 75 illegal immigrants were found Tuesday in the desert
about 50 miles west of Phoenix, many suffering from dehydration and exhaustion
from triple-digit heat, authorities said.

Seven immigrants and three sheriff's deputies were taken to hospitals for treatment,
said Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Officers used a helicopter, canine units
and all-terrain vehicles, and conducted foot patrols to search for others believed
to be in the area.

The immigrants told authorities that three people had died in the desert, but the
search hasn't turned up any bodies, authorities said.

Investigators suspect that the immigrants were left in the location until smugglers
could arrange transportation for them to be taken elsewhere, Arpaio said.

1. Oh, how sad.
Many more people are dying right now because of the heat.

2. Tis the season, as sad as it is. The heat is brutal, people are
obviously desparate, people die.

3. The Mexican government has catastrophically failed its people.
This is the unfortunate result.

6. It's amazing what these illegal aliens
will put themselves through just to come to the US to join gangs and get welfare. :sarcasm: I go ballistic when I hear claims that the "illegals" are the root of all urban troubles. Americans won't even go to the polls to improve their lives yet many foreigners consider the opportunities here to be worth risking their lives.

8. Mexico: What a mess.
Mexico's near communist agricultural policies cause a great part of this. They also won't allow foreign investment in their oil and gas industry, which is 100% .gov owned, and it is a miserable failure.

Mexico is a failed nation. Hopefully, it can turn around. I grieve for her people.

9. "near communist agricultural policies"?
Please explain. Also explain why Mexico should sell off its natural resources.

Mexico has problems but is NOT a "failed nation."

12. Their agriculture is a mess.
From what I understand, great portions of Mexican agriculture are collective style, established by the government. Each person gets a couple of acres, and there is extreme poverty.

Mexico should allow foreign investment, like every other country on earth, because their state owned PEMEX Oil and NG company has not the assets or money to explore for oil. Hell, Mexico has to import gas because PEMEX can't afford to build a refinery!

20. hahahaha

Sorry, couldn't restrain myself.

It's slow down in the gun dungeon these days. My fellow denizens are popping up into the daylight to talk about bad foreign countries, bad women trying to make men pay child support ... I'll see whether I can create a diversion down there and relieve the strain. ;)

15. Mexico's collective agriculture was not established by the state.
Instead, the ejidos were the traditional form of social organization for Indian agricultural villages. The Indians fought "Liberal" reformers who thought like you and wanted to divide up their lands capitalist style. This was part of the reason for the Mexican Revolution. After the Revolution, the ejidos were strengthened, but as part of the great NAFTA plan, then Pres. Salinas allowed them to be re-privatized in the early 1990s. If Mexican small holders are having economic problems, it's not because of communist property relations but because of global capitalism.

As for oil, Mexico will, I'm sure, give your views all the weight they're worth.

Now, aren't you late for class at the Ayn Rand School of International Relations?

16. T hanks for the info on the Ejidos. I got all my info from
word of mouth. Basically from a Texas landowner who has dozens of former ejido workers cowboying at her ranch. Thank you.

11. Oh, please
There is no communist policy there, the people are just poor and there are not enough jobs.

18. My apologies for being tart. But it seemed like you were just
spouting conservative talking points. Given that you got your information from a Texas rancher, that's not surprising. There are good histories of Mexico. Check 'em out.

I'd love to find a good neutral source (is there neutrality anymore?).
