Judge seizes funds for Gulf War POWs

A US federal judge has moved to seize $653 million in Iraqi assets to pay former Gulf War prisoners of war who allege they were tortured by their captors, according to court documents.

The order issued by Judge Richard Roberts restricts the use of the money, held by the US Government in an account of seized Iraqi assets.

The administration of President George W Bush had wanted to use the money to pay for Iraq's reconstruction.

Judge Roberts's order gives the Government 10 days to argue why the money should not be distributed to the former prisoners.
