Time to build bridges, not burn them: Musharraf
The Palestinian dispute lies at the core of Iraq and other conflicts involving the Islamic world, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf said in New York on Wednesday.

"Let us go to the solution of the Palestinian issue; other things will themselves fall in line," Musharraf told the annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative at the Sheraton New York. He was participating in a panel on 'Urgent Issues and Innovative Solutions,' moments after former US President Bill Clinton and First Lady Laura Bush addressed the opening plenary.

Musharraf drew applause when he said, in an obvious reference to Iraq, that new fronts should not be opened. "We must start closing fronts."

Commenting on the Danish cartoon controversy, he said it was time to build bridges and not burn them. All political disputes around the world at this point involve Muslims, he said, adding that they are reeling under poverty and deprivation. "And we come out with things like the Danish cartoons or the Pope's remarks against our Prophet," he said. "I don't think anyone has the right to hurt anybody's feeling, least of all, at this time when there is so much tension."

4. Can you address the substance of his remarks?
I would be interested in commentary on the substance of his comments -- the part about building bridges, preventing war, de-escalating Neocon and Theocon hatemongering and warmongering for bloodlust.

That part.

5. He speaks with substance to his own people
I've heard an earload of his remarks, and the man has sponsored terrorist
wars himself as lead general, exhonorates the worlds greatest proliferator
of WMD's, and has overseen nuclear testing near to starting war(s). What
else need the man possibly say, i am waiting for his resignation.

Until then, i'm indignant when they give that felonious war criminal hoodlum a podium.

7. it is not the core issue, that's propaganda
The core issue for california is not new jersey and
the core issue for pakistan is not palestine.

Its a bob and weave distraction for a man who is a DICTATOR,
"look over there", that's the problem... the problem couldn't
possibly be Pakistan, and its sponsorship of the taliban and
al queda, its terrorism in india, its nuclear testing and
prolifation, the problem is a bit closer to home Musharraf,
watch it or they'll zia al haq ya.

12. Again, I'm not asking you for your comments about him.
What about the subject of the title and original post, "building bridges" and resolving key dispute(s) in the Middle East?

From your posts, it appears that you are opposed to this.

13. His words can't be divorced from the man
Dictators can't build bridges, they start wars, the best way for them
to build bridges is to resign and restore civilian rule. Israel is not
important, it is a tiny country with a tiny population, truly irrelevant
in the greater billions that need building bridges in totalitarian dictatorships
across the middle east.

I suppose next you'll ask how Mubarak's intellectual views affect egyption democracy,
or how the Wahabi cult's ideals affect saudi democracy, or how the taliban incomers
affect pakistani democracy, or how israeli bombs help palestinean democracy, and in
ALL cases, its because its not a democracy, and the people are not represented, don't
have liberty, and for a dictator to comment that they should have liberty, really
smacks of silly nonsense.

11. please remove the log from your eye before...
but he does have a point: removing Palestine as a rallying point for fundy Islam would help de-escalate the situation.

bombs just make it worse.
