Tories surge back with a poll lead
The Conservatives have recovered their opinion poll lead over Labour following their annual party conference, according to a new survey.

The ICM poll for The Sunday Telegraph put the Tories on 38%, six points ahead of Labour on 32% with the Liberal Democrats on 20%.

Asked who would make the better prime minister, 45% chose Tory leader David Cameron as against 34% for Chancellor Gordon Brown.

The poll also found 54% wanted British troops out of Iraq by the end of the year and 52% wanted them brought back from Afghanistan by the same date.

1. This is not good......
Thank you Tony Blair for giving us another possible Thatcher clone. Labour will have to suffer for his unwavering support for the idiot son.

10. Actually, Cameron isn't a Thatcher clone. What he is..
is a Blair clone. They are remarkably similar in their pursuit of the 'centre ground'; their smarminess; and appetite for spin.

However, Cameron's party does include lots of Thatcher clones, who will undoubtedly try to control policy, and push Cameron to the right. So things would be worse, even if possibly not much worse, under the Tories than they are now.

Blair, by pushing his party to the right and controlling it so autocratically, has made it hard to find a suitable alternative. One problem with Brown is that people associate him with Blair.

3. Tony Blair and his fellow
neoliberals have done the Labour Party like a five-pound tart*.

...Then kept the fiver.

*: In contemporary usage (especially European usage) language (especially slang), including language formerly considered as being specific to one sex, is (can be) interpreted as referring to either sex.

For example: 'He's such a tart.' (here, promiscuous person, not prostitute) is appropriate usage when the phrase is descriptive -- and most especially when it's characterizing. Of course, being so labeled could be considered an insult; however, the word isn't entirely without affectionate and playful elements, depending on the particulars of usage.

4. It's weird to think how happy I was when Tony Blair was first elected.
What a huge, stinking disappointment he turned out to be. :(

6. Perhaps Gordon Brown is ...
suffering from "Prince Charles Syndrome," i.e., being the heir apparent for so long, people get bored of you and simply prefer a "fresh face."

7. The funny thing here...
...is that Cameron's Conservatives are in many respects aping many of New Labour's characteristics in terms of spin, style and "triangulation" over substance. The problem for Labour is that it's very difficult for them to attack Cameron over this as it can look like the pot calling the kettle black at times!

8. Are the English as batshit crazy as the Americans are?
Want to vote for the Conservatives yet want out of Iraq. Labour does not want to be in Iraq only Tony Blair wants to be there. Blair is destroying the Party.

9. The people who destroyed Labour
Are the union leaders, councillors and MPs who ignored their own conscience because they didn't want to lose their positions.
