U.S. Military Says Taliban Stepping Up Attacks

BAGRAM/SPIN BOLDAK, Afghanistan (Reuters) - The U.S. army said on Monday that Taliban guerrillas had stepped up attacks in southern Afghanistan, with nine coalition soldiers wounded and up to 24 Taliban killed in the last four days.

Stepped up attacks in Afghanistan from suspected Taliban militants come at a time when the 146,000 troops in Iraq have come under almost daily assault.

U.S. military spokesman Colonel Rodney Davis said between 22 and 24 Taliban fighters had been killed in a major operation near the town of Spin Boldak on Saturday, and five suspects were taken into custody the following day after an arms cache was discovered.

"Yes, the attacks have increased nowadays," Davis told reporters at the U.S. military headquarters at Bagram air base, in response to a question. "This engagement in Spin Boldak was the biggest in two months," he said.
