Bush approval sinks to 37% : Zogby
Job approval for Congress drops below 20%; Just one in three say Iraq war has been worth it

After making headway improving his job approval rating over the course of several weeks, President Bush took a hit last week, dropping from 42% three weeks ago to 37% in a national live telephone survey conducted last week by Zogby International.

Bush was last at 37% positive job approval in a Zogby telephone poll taken in early September. In this latest survey, 63% gave him negative job marks.

He held steady among Republicans in this latest survey - 72% said they give the President positive marks for his work. However, independent voters abandoned him - just 24% gave him positive marks, down from 36% just three weeks ago.

While married respondents, a part of Bush's political base, remained steady at 42% positive in this latest survey, another demographic that has strongly supported him in the past - weekly Wal-Mart shoppers - turned more negative. Just 43% gave him positive marks in this latest poll, down from 55% three weeks ago. Among those shoppers, 57% gave him negative job marks.

3. I think it is pretty interesting
Every time I respond to a Zogby poll, one of the demo questions is how often do you shop at WalMart? This is the first time I've seen results of that question published.

4. I dunno, but Zog always asks that question about how often you
shop at MallWart, along with questions about whether you consider yourself a member of the "investor class," whether you own guns, etc.

9. Zog needs the demographics for his "special sauce"
his formula for weighting voters depends heavily on these seemingly irrelevant variables.

7. Maybe the reason Bush is holding steady among Puggies is
that unhappy Puggies tend to remove themselves from that demographic by redifining themselves out of the party.

"Like Bush?"
"--Fuck no!"
"Republican?"
"--Not since I heard Kuo on 60 Minutes."

12. rural and sub-rural poorish white people
The kind the GOP has convinced that Christian morals is more important than helping them get better lives. The kind that consistantly votes against their own best interest because of single-issue itmes. And, now, perhaps, the kind that is taking huge losses in Iraq and Afghanistan and might finally be seeing the light.

13. There's a strong correlation between your political ideology
and whether or not you shop at Wal Mart.

14. With elections coming up, people are now paying attention
That's a big factor as to why it's dropping. All the no-thinking, "yeah he's fine (though I really haven't been paying attention)" responses are disappearing.
