New Mexico’s first congressional district race is one of the top contests in the nation in this November’s elections. The race features two women, the incumbent – Republican Heather Wilson and the state’s attorney general – Democrat Patricia Madrid. As Leslie Clark reports, to date, the contest is a statistical dead heat and is being closely watched by organized labor.

Political science professor and analyst, Lonna Atkenson, says labor hasn’t supported Wilson and this year, she believes organized labor has the capability that could get Democrat Madrid elected.
: “Labor being organized can really make a difference for a candidate is in their ability to participate in the ground war actively.”
Regardless of who wins the first congressional district race in new Mexico, United Staff-UNM President Terry Mulcahy says labor’s job won’t be over it must hold the representative’s feet to the fire.
: "“If Madrid is elected I think there is a feeling that all that work will go to something that something positive may result from it.”
