AP: 11M Bottles of Acetaminophen Recalled (store-brand)

11M Bottles of Acetaminophen Recalled

WASHINGTON Nov 9, 2006 (AP)— A major manufacturer of store-brand
acetaminophen recalled 11 million bottles of the pain-relieving pills
Thursday after discovering some were contaminated with metal fragments.

Perrigo Co. said it discovered the metal bits during quality-control checks.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or illness. The recall affects
bottles containing various amounts of 500-milligram caplets.

Perrigo bills itself as the world's largest manufacturer of store-brand
nonprescription drugs. The Allegan, Mich., company did not disclose the
chains for which it manufactures the store-brand acetaminophen.

However, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., CVS Corp., Walgreen Co. and Costco
Wholesale Corp. are among the companies it supplies with health care
products, according to company Securities and Exchange Commission
filings.

1. Gotta listen to the White Stripes more...
Girl you have no faith in medicine
Oh girl you have no faith in medicine
Acetaminophen you see the medicine oh girl

Is there a way to find the cure for this implanted in a pill
It’s just the name upon the bottle, which determines if it will
Is the problem you're allergic to a well familiar name?
Do you have a problem with this one if the results are the same?

Acetaminophen you see the medicine
Oh girl you have no faith in medicine x2
Acetaminophen you see the medicine oh girl

But girl you have no faith in medicine
Acetaminophen you see the medicine oh girl

Well strip the bark right off a tree and just hand it this way
Don't even need a drink of water to make the headache go away
Give me a sugar pill and watch me just rattle down the street

Acetaminophen you see the medicine
Oh girl you have no faith in medicine x2
Oh girl x4

2. We found two bottles here
One was the Wal-Mart store brand, the other was from Walgreens. One was unopened, the other was nearly full. Both were manufactured by Perrigo. I'm not sure if ours were from a contaminated lot, but we threw them away anyway. Better safe than sorry.

3. Recall: Store brand acetaminophen.
As many as 11 million bottles of store-brand acetaminophen, the pain killer, were recalled by the manufacturer today because some of the caplets in the bottles are contaminated with metal fragments.

<snip>

According to the Food and Drug Administration, the store chains involved in the recall include Wal-Mart, CVS, Wakefern ShopRite, Safeway and Winn Dixie.

6. Scary stuff
Even though Dems are less likely to have headaches right now than any time in the past 6 years. Still, metal fragments in you painkiller/fever reducer is a scary thought.

5. Thanks for the heads-up. I shop at Safeway.
I'll be checking my medicine cabinet to make sure, although I usually buy ibuprofen.

7. One bottle here too!
Called the number, and they'll send a box to send back for after-the-fact QC and refund purchase price by coupon, maybe?

9. Then I'm safe. Acetaminophen makes me throw up.
Plus it does nothing for me, especially anything I have resembling a headache/bodyache/fever. Seriously, it makes everything worse for me! My docs are kind of amazed by that, but it's true. I might be the first person ever to need a medical bracelet saying NO ACETAMINOPHEN, PLEASE! I am an aspirin or ibuprofen girl. (I do aspirin first, always, as ibuprofen still doesn't really help as much.)

Now, the problem with my situation: walk into a cold/flu/sinus aisle and tell me the number of products WITHOUT acetaminophen. Trust me; you can count them on one hand, but they are hidden within half a block of store space. So I have to sort through everything to find something that might help...now THAT sucks.
