Human rights groups denounce 'victor's justice' execution
Human rights groups denounce 'victor's justice' execution
Published: 12/30/2006

LONDON - International human rights groups deplored the execution of Saddam Hussein Saturday, saying it marked "a significant step away" from the rule of law and would do nothing to halt bloodshed in Iraq.

While organisations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch agreed that Saddam should have been held to account, they voiced deep concern that he faced the death penalty.

This was compounded by concerns over alleged political interference in the judicial process which condemned Saddam to the gallows.

He was sentenced to death by an Iraqi court in November after a year-long trial over the killings of 148 Shias in the town of Dujail in 1982.

7. Iran's statement says it all...
"With regard to Saddam's execution, it amounts to a victory of the Iraqi people as they were the winners of his fall <...> Saddam's regime was overthrown because the Iraqi people did not support him. It is crystal clear that the United States should not misinterpret his fall and take the credit to itself. <...> Investigation into the Iraqi invasion in Iran (1980-1988) and in Kuwait (1990) could have disclosed the US involvement in Saddam's crimes and therefore the Americans preferred to close the case earlier."<40> - Deputy Foreign Minister Hamid Reza Asefi.

5. He wiped out a town like the US generals wiped out Falluja - to teach a lesson and to get revenge.
Victors' justice indeed. What hypocrisy.

He should have been kept alive to testify in the other two main incidents.
