(Robert) Redford demands apology over Iraq
Edited on Fri Jan-19-07 11:46 AM by deadparrot
Hollywood legend Robert Redford has called on US leaders to apologise for the war in Iraq.

The actor was speaking at the start of the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, where the opening movie recalled protests over the Vietnam war in 1968.

Redford said he, like many others, had shown a "spirit of unity" with the US government after 11 September 2001.

"We put all our concerns on hold to let the leaders lead," he said. "I think we're owed a big, massive apology."

1. And several hundred thousand people are owed their LIVES and LIMBS back.
And that's just as likely to happen as the bush regime apologizing for causing the loss of lives & limbs.

3. Good observation. I think the MSM goes to great lengths to ridicule the "Hollywood types."

4. Hm. I thought when I saw the thread, he was calling for an apology
to the Iraqis. I don't think we really need an apology... I think they do.

6. I call bullsh^t. Those of us who were screaming from the rafters all along wonder about Redford
and all the other notables who remained mum on the issue in spite of abundant evidence.

This "spirit of unity" isn't a license to cover your eyes and bury your head.

Redford should start with an apology for his own lack of action. He can lead by example.

Peace.

Robert Redford urges a different kind of patriotism

Duncan Campbell in Los Angeles
Tuesday December 3, 2002
The Guardian

The actor and director Robert Redford has accused President Bush of pursuing a "dangerous and self-defeating" path in the Middle East and asserted that true American patriotism lies in reducing the country's dependence on oil.

Redford is the latest public figure to attack the Bush administration's policy on Iraq and call for a new definition of patriotism.

"The Bush White House talks tough on military matters in the Middle East while remaining virtually silent about the long-term problems posed by US dependence on fossil fuels," Redford writes in an article in the Los Angeles Times. "The Bush administration's energy policy to date - a military garrison in the Middle East and drilling for oil in the Arctic and other fragile habitats - is costly, dangerous and self-defeating."
...
"To get the United States off fossil fuels in this uneasy national climate of terrorism and conflict in the Persian Gulf we must treat the issue with the urgency and persistence it deserves."

9. Thank you. I'll retract my criticism as it was made. But now I wonder what he meant
when he said our "spirit of unity" allowed this folly to proceed, since his dissension in Dec. 02 seems to contradict his words. By December 2002, Congress had already approved the war in Iraq, Wellstone had already died in a plane crash, Saddam had been given a phony ultimatum, and the election had yielded our entire government to the Republicans.

In any case, I like Redford and I'm glad to be reminded of his statement in Dec. 02. Still, MOST of the celebrities and notables quashed their criticism back when it might have made a difference.

Peace

12. Better to speak out now than never.
Celebrities who were vocal against the Iraq debacle early on, were grilled and smeared and swiftboated. It may have been too risky of a career move to speak out in 2003.

11. WE're owed a
fucking bit more than an apology, Mr Redford. How about an idictment of our corporatemedia and the bushit regime for Crimes Against Humanity just for starters?

13. Apologies are for "fox paws"...
like farting at the dinner table.

Impeachments are for pushing our country into an unjustifyable war.

War crimes trials are for killing innocents and destroying countries.
