LONDON -- A soldier killed in a roadside bombing Monday was the 100th British death attributed to hostile action since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, according to the Ministry of Defense.
The British soldier, who was not immediately identified, was killed near the U.S. consulate in Basra, Capt. Katie Brown said from Basra, where about 7,500 British troops are based.
According to the Ministry of Defense, 131 British servicemen and women have died in Iraq since the beginning of the war.
Of those, 100 deaths were attributed to injuries suffered in action.
The other 31 deaths were due to road accidents, illness, natural causes or unexplained causes, the ministry said.
In the first 15 days of this year, the ministry said 99 British military and civilian personnel were treated for injuries in action, and 1,242 were admitted to field hospitals for disease or injuries not suffered in combat....
