High court turns down illegal-worker case
Floor-covering firm's appeal rejected over unlawful immigrant hiring suit

Updated: 20 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court on Monday said it has declined to consider an appeal by a carpet and floor-covering company that was sued by its employees for hiring illegal immigrants in an effort to depress wages.

Mohawk Industries Inc. had sought to have the case dismissed, something lower federal courts had declined to do. The Court's decision allows the suit to proceed in federal court.

The case was argued before the Supreme Court in April last year but the justices did not issue a ruling. Instead, they sent it back to a lower court to be reconsidered in light of a decision by the justices in a similar case.

1. Well, can you believe the gall of these American workers? Daring
to file a lawsuit in order to protect their jobs and to ensure that they earn a living wage. I mean, what the hell, aren't these all jobs 'Americans refuse to do'? And how can they be so damn cruel and heartless to take away work form these illegal aliens.

:sarcasm:

4. Really. Shame on those American workers for providing a high profile
case that will prove that illegal aliens are being used to keep wages down.

5. Mother Jones Magazine could have predicted something like this

The zine did a truthful account of how the ability of American employers to bring in undocumented workers leads to rampant decline in wages, rampant decline in safety measures on the job.

They focused on the meat-packing industry that until what? fifteen years ago or so paid its unionized workers a decent living.

Now that the ubndocumented are allowed to be the wrokforce, the floors at the packing houses are slippery with blod. The workforce is expected to produce at such a high rate of speed that many workers are injured in a short span of time due to carpal tunnel syndrom, and also outright injuries - being cut and sliced and diced by machinery, etc.

Once the worker is injured, they are thrown out of the employers' work list and payroll. Then the local communities see their bill for social services spiral upwards, including the medical treatment of the injured and laid off workers.

Corporte America needs to be held accountable, whether through lawsuits or changes in state law that force the industries employing people to be responsible for decent wages, enforcement of real safety standards and also medical care.
