Prensa Latina: Aznar May Be Tried as War Criminal
Aznar May Be Tried as War Criminal

February 26, 2007

Madrid, Feb 26 (Prensa Latina) The PCE (Spanish Communist Party) said Monday that it will file a lawsuit, along with other organizations, to have ex President of Government Jose Maria Aznar tried as a war criminal.

Aznar will be accused of "contributing to the beginning of an illegal and bloody war for the control of energy resources in Iraq," said the PCE in a press release.

The organization added that it would back "all international initiatives aimed at trying the Azores trio for committing crimes of war and against humankind, due to their direct support for the invasion, destruction and occupation of Iraq." The trio is made up of Aznar, US President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who masterminded the invasion on the island of Azores in a meeting known as "the Azores photo." The PCE is also preparing a formal petition demanding that the Attorney General s Office investigate the role of the Popular Party, particularly its president, in sending Spanish police officers to the illegal naval base in Guantanamo.

From an embedded link in the original story:

.....

The daily (El Pais), which uncovered the illegal visits of Spanish police officers to Guantanamo to interview prisoners without court authorization, informs that the chief of the prison gave the mission details of the legal limbo of the inmates.

US Air Force Gen. Michael Dunleavy, chief of the base until autumn 2002, told the Spanish mission that several inmates had not done anything to justify being held in the prison.

The general made the statements to the Spanish diplomat who accompanied Chief Inspector Rafael Gomez Menor and police officer Francisco Javier Almeida Luengo, who interrogated prisoners in Guantanamo from June 21 to 26, 2002.

8. The black cars of the Guardia Civil
The reporter who investigated the illegal renditions used the records and web sites of the executive-jet-spotters to put that story together. It was a great segment on Terri Gross' Fresh Air in October 2006. And now, some Clash:

5. Sure hope something comes from this, and that it's just the beginning of their fears.
They all knew what they were doing was wrong, but they couldn't walk away like conscientious men when there was so much power within reach. Monsters.

They'll NEVER be able to compensate for the suffering they've caused, if they live to be thousands of years old.

10. That's "Anzar" to you, Mr. President...
Edited on Tue Feb-27-07 10:39 AM by KansDem
Before the news conference, Mr. Bush spent the bulk of his time with Mr. Aznar at the prime minister's country retreat in the Toledo Mountains, a getaway similar in spirit to Mr. Bush's ranch in Crawford, Tex. As the two leaders talked and walked the grounds, neither wore a tie or suit jacket. All in all, the visit seemed perfectly tailored to Mr. Bush's informal tastes, a recipe for a relaxed entry into European politics.

Mr. Bush has not always been so sturdy when discussing world affairs and uttering foreign words. On Monday, in an interview with Spanish state television, he mispronounced Mr. Aznar's last name, transposing the middle consonants and saying "Anzar."

Didn't want His Royal Flatulence to be confused thinking "Aznar" and "Anzar" were two different people...
