Rudy Giuliani: I Turned GOP Over Taxes
Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani addressed his Democratic past on Monday and offered one reason for his political conversion - taxes.

"I don't think anything separates us more right now between Republicans and Democrats than how we look at taxes," the former New York mayor said. "What we understand as Republicans is that, sure, the government is an important player in this, but we are essentially a private economy. What Democrats really believe ... is that it is essentially a government economy."

That's what I like so much about Rudy: he takes a position and keeps it...

MAYOR GIULIANI AND SPEAKER VALLONE ANNOUNCE OPPOSITION TO ALBANY'S PROPOSAL TO ELIMINATE THE COMMUTER INCOME TAX
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani was joined by City Council Speaker Peter F. Vallone for a press conference at City Hall today to formally announce their opposition to the State Legislature's proposal to eliminate New York City's commuter income tax. The legislation proposes to permanently eliminate the .45% commuter tax, which would cost the City an estimated $360 million annually. In addition, the legislation proposes to eliminate the tax retroactive to January 1, 1999. As a result of the retroactive provision, the City would have to refund an additional $180 million, for a tax lawfully collected pursuant to an act of legislature, bringing the total loss incurred by the City to $540 million.

"I strongly oppose this legislation, which would eliminate this tax for non-residents and unfairly punish those who live and work in New York City," said Mayor Giuliani. "This modest tax, .45 percent, provides the City with close to $360 million in tax revenue annually and helps support many of the City's services enjoyed by non-residents working in our City. To act on our taxes without our agreement is bad enough, but to now force the City to retroactively refund money is an invasion of the City's treasury.

5. Ah... but my state income taxes should be unevenly dispersed to NYC schools
Edited on Tue Feb-27-07 04:42 PM by tk2kewl
while my property taxes skyrocket to pay for my own local schools

NYC property taxes are 1/3 to 1/4 of mine

7. NYC has most of the students.
However, suburban property taxes are majorly fucked up. Many places out on the island have high taxes for newer homes while older homes are assessed at a 1934 rate, or something like that.
Is there a link that shows NYC property taxes as that much lower than yours?

11. For an apartment or a house?
I would think that for the same square footage, an apartment would have much lower taxes because so many are sharing the same patch of ground.

10. Hmmm...
And NYC pays an inordinate amount of state and national taxes, sending out much more of both than it receives.

14. Here are some stats
On a statewide basis:

>>New York City’s Balance of Payments with New York State

New York City sends to New York State (depending on the analysis) between $7 billion and $11.1 billion more in taxes, fees and other revenues than it receives in services, aid, and other spending, according to the most recent data available. <<

http://webdocs.nyccouncil.info/attachments/65379.htm?CFID=232457&CFTOKEN=33008944

On a federal basis:

>>The state has a strong imbalance of payments with the federal government. New York state receives 82 cents in services for every $1 it sends in taxes to the federal government in Washington.<10> The state ranks near the bottom, in 42nd place, in federal spending per tax dollar.<<

17. Rudy doesn't want to invest in America. He wants to suck all the money into his pocket.
And give nothing back.

He's a leech, like many Republicans I know. They want services for free, they want to pay nothing in taxes.

6. Hobson's choice
You pay your taxes or your kids and grandkids pay your taxes. That pretty much sums up the differences between the Democratic and Republican parties.

The "family values" platform just allows them to convince themselves that they are morally superior while they are robbing their children of their future. I do not know one person who is a Republican because of their moral stance.
