Guantanamo prisoner Khadr seeks ruling by top U.S. court
WASHINGTON (Feb 28, 2007)

Omar Khadr, a Canadian imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay, wants the U.S. Supreme Court to rule quickly on his legal rights before the justices go off on their summer break.

Lawyers for Khadr and Yemeni prisoner Salim Ahmed Hamdan, who face military trials as early as this summer, asked the court yesterday to hear their cases on a rare fast track. Their request was even more unusual because a U.S. federal appeals court has yet to rule on whether Khadr and Hamdan can be tried by a military tribunal or whether they have the right to mount their challenge in U.S. courts.

Khadr is accused of killing a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan and Hamdan is accused of supporting al-Qaida operatives.
