Police, insurgents clash south of Baghdad, 8 killed

BAGHDAD, March 1 (Reuters) - Fierce clashes between insurgents and police left at least eight people dead and 11 wounded south of Baghdad on Thursday, police sources said.

The clashes occurred in the religiously mixed town of Iskandariya, 40 km (25 miles) south of Baghdad, and police said both sides suffered casualties.

A police source said the clashes were still in progress and they expected the casualty toll to rise.

BAGHDAD (CNN) -- A roadside bomb exploded near a minibus filled with Baghdad City Council officials in eastern Baghdad Thursday, killing one official and wounding four others, an Interior Ministry official said.

BAGHDAD, March 1 (Reuters) - A car bomb targeting a convoy of cars carrying guests
at the wedding of an Iraqi policemen killed five people and wounded 10 in the western
city of Falluja on Thursday, a police source said.

The source said the victims were guests driving in procession behind the bride and
groom, as is traditional at Iraqi weddings.

Falluja is in Iraq's western province of Anbar where U.S. and Iraqi forces are battling
a fierce insurgency by al Qaeda and other Sunni Arab militant groups. Police are
frequently the target of bombers seeking to discourage recruitment.

BAGHDAD, March 1 (Reuters) - Iraqi security forces said they had killed dozens of
al Qaeda insurgents who attacked a village near Falluja in western Iraq on Wednesday,
sparking fierce clashes for much of the day, officials said on Thursday.

Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Karim Khalaf told Reuters foreign Arabs and Afghanis
were among some 80 militants killed and 50 captured in the clashes in Amiriyat al Falluja,
a village where local tribes had opposed al Qaeda.

There was no immediate verification of the number of casualties from medical sources.

ISKANDARIYA - The U.S. military said insurgents fired mortar rounds that killed four Iraqi civilians and wounded 10 in Iskandariya. A police source had said eight people were killed in clashes there and it was not clear if the reports were referring to the same incident.
