Jobless claims at highest level in more than a year

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - More workers are losing their jobs, and they are finding it harder to find a new one, government data released Thursday show.

The four-week average of new unemployment claims climbed to the highest level since October 2005, while the number of continuing jobless claims rose to the highest level since December 2005, the Labor Department reported.
Beneath the noisy weekly data, a weakening trend is emerging in the labor market.

First-time initial jobless claims climbed by 7,000 in the week ending Feb. 24, to 338,000.

The four-week moving average of new claims -- considered a better indicator because it smoothes out one-time events like strikes or weather -- rose by 7,500 to 335,250, its highest level since the end of October 2005.

1. Well my daughter can not find a job and she has a college ed.
She takes anything and works day jobs. It is just so bad for her. She lacks one class for a teacher but of course can not go to college and get it as she has no job so no money. I am so worried about her.

2. And those figures
are based only on those that are still receiving benefits. There are many who have fallen off the rolls since Congress has not authorized extended benefits in almost 5 (?) years!

Sorry to hear about your daughter, Izzie. I too have a degree but because of my age and the backwards area I live in, other than working a 60 hour job at a local factory, there is nothing for me!

Good luck to your daughter and  from one mom to another.

Jenn

3. You mean Bush lied?
"and they are finding it harder to find a new one"

Last week Bush said Americans were finding jobs quicker and long term unemployment was dropping.

6. It's easy for Bush to make happy news. He just takes the actual news and says the opposite.

7. Going into my 3rd month of UE and....
the job market sucks...

I'm into inventory/material mgmt and purchasing/production planning in a mfg setting. Mfg jobs are so hard to find. Most gigs I see are on the supply side supporting the retail/service industries. They are starting to want purchasing agents and buyers to have an MBA again, just like back in the meltdown 2001-2003.

We are fooked. Thank god I spent the last 3 years getting out of debt. UE bennies are double my current obligations so I'n still socking away some cash every month. But it sure is getting depressing week after week, interview here and there but no follow up.

I think there is a shitload of people out of work and the job market stinks horribly.

I don't believe a thing chimpy and crew put out. If they say its a little bad that means in down right suks

Assholes:spank:

Mea culpa - I revised the lyrics

My bills are all due, the granbabies need shoes but I'm busted
But petrol is up to $3 per gal and I'm busted
Gotta a car that's gone dry and a guy that can't lay
The big stack of sorries gets bigger each day
The County'll be haulin' my belongings away 'cause I'm busted!

I went to my brother to ask for a loan--I was busted
I just hate to beg like a dog for a bone but I'm busted
My bro' and the folks said there ain't a thing they could do
It's just NOT THEIR FAULT I came down with the flu
'Specially just when they're thinkin' they ought to call on old me--but I'm busted!"

Lord I ain't no thief but a gal can go wrong when she's busted
The bulk food that I stored up last summer is gone and I'm busted
The Monster is bare, but the Repukes don't know
Cause FOX and that Coulter put on a good show
Now how we'll be livin' the Lord only knows but I'm busted!

not sure exactly what she was doing, but she is now looking for work in a decidedly unpleasant time. I wish all the job seekers good luck.
