'Tiny Bubbles' singer Don Ho dies at 76
By JAYMES SONG, Associated Press Writer

Legendary crooner Don Ho, who entertained tourists for decades wearing raspberry-tinted sunglasses and singing the catchy signature tune "Tiny Bubbles," has died. He was 76.

He died Saturday morning of heart failure, publicist Donna Jung said.

Ho had suffered with heart problems for the past several years, and had a pacemaker installed last fall. In 2005, he underwent an experimental stem cell procedure on his ailing heart in Thailand in 2005.

Ho entertained Hollywood's biggest stars and thousands of tourists for four decades. For many, no trip to Hawaii was complete without seeing his Waikiki show — a mix of songs, jokes, double entendres, Hawaii history and audience participation.

2. My mom loved Don Ho,
and watched his show religiously, in the 70's.

So I'll post this on her behalf:

5. Ditto here. Pretty sure Mom had every one of his albums too. She'd
play her guitar and sing along to them whenever she had the chance. I remember Sweet Someone and Pearly Shells and some jazzy tune...Cuz It ain't, NO it ain't.... sumptin sumptin (I forget the words)

3. He appeared at the now defunct CINERAMA hotel

I never saw him live, but would love to see a film of him there again.

4. No one else could have been Don Ho but Don Ho.
Never caught any of his concerts. Never been to Hawai'i.

Probably my loss on both counts.

RIP, Don.

6. Yes, Hawaii is very beautiful and vitalizing..
it has to be seen to really be believed.

I have a fridge magnet that I got of Don Ho, with lots of leis around his neck, down in Florida one time, just so I could see his smiling face when I'm in the kitchen. :)

8. Hi, zidzi. I'll get to Hawai'i one of these days. I've been meaning to
go for a while now.

I hope his fans show Don Ho a proper tribute. He gave them a lot over a long, long period.

17. Go.
I never thought I would get to see the islands, but all the stars aligned and "fate stepped in to see me through" at last in 2002. I went to Kauai, and it exceeded anything I ever expected. Hope I can go back!

We don't have forever, we only think we do. Go now, before you are a day older. Go now, before it is a day too late. And take someone you love with you.

13. RIP
I got to see his luau show back in '72 when we lived in Waikiki. My friends came to visit from N.Y. so had to make sure they saw the legendary Don Ho. My husband never got to see him though, he was off fighting that other mistake of a war, Vietnam.

18. That's sad... Now he'll be up there with Kui Lee singing some of their songs together!
Edited on Sun Apr-15-07 04:54 AM by calipendence
like "I'll Remember You!" and "If I had to Do It, All Over Again!"

Still remember Kui Lee from when I was in Hawaii back in the 60's and when he left us so early in his career. Kind of reminds me of then...

At least Don Ho was with us enough years for both of their music to be heard by a lot of folk!

In loving tribute, a song by Hawaiian artist Henry Kapono, performed by Jimmy Buffett on his CD "Take The Weather With You":

"Dukes on Sunday"

People here and all over the world
Men, Women, Boys and Pretty Girls
Gather 'round by the seaside, Beach fun and tropic sky
Diamond Head and Palm Trees Yeah, Surf riders on the sea
It's the place to be, it's the place to be
One the beach at Waikiki, that's where you'll find me
Here on the southside, Beach Boys paradise

Duke's on Sunday
Duke's on Sunday
Duke's on Sunday
Duke's on Sunday

Music playing Happy songs, everybody gets along
Dancin' in the Sunshine, Groovin' in the good Vibe
Down by the sea, Good times will set your free
Just you and me, this is the place to be
On the beach at Waikiki, that's where you'll find me
Here on the Southside, Beach Boys paradise

Duke's on Sunday
Duke's on Sunday
Having fun underneath the sun, Just you and me

(Instrumental Break)

Feelin' Good and Feelin' Right, Sunset is out of Sight
Another Beautiful Hawaiian Day, Everything's gonna be O.K.
Let's Get together and do this again
At the beach at Waikiki, that's where you'll find me
Here on the southside, Beach Boys paradise

Duke's on Sunday
Duke's on Sunday
Duke's on Sunday
Duke's on Sunday
Duke's on Sunday

- Henry Kapono

21. He played the Portland Zoo a few years ago
On a beautiful summer day. Half the Hawaiian population of Portland was out, and Don seemed to know half of them. The lawn was awash in aloha shirts, wine flowed freely, and everyone there had a blast. What a great entertainer. It was a show I'll never forget.

22. Well, that's just sad. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy.
He did live a good life, though, apparently, lots of love and friendship, I hope.

RIP, Don.
