Move to block emissions 'swindle' DVD
Source: Guardian Unlimited

Dozens of climate scientists are trying to block the DVD release of a controversial Channel 4 programme that claimed global warming is nothing to do with human greenhouse gas emissions.

Sir John Houghton, former head of the Met Office, and Bob May, former president of the Royal Society, are among 37 experts who have called for the DVD to be heavily edited or removed from sale. The film, the Great Global Warming Swindle, was first shown on March 8, and was criticised by scientists as distorted and misleading.

In an open letter to Martin Durkin, head of Wag TV, the independent production company that made the film, the scientists say: "We believe that the misrepresentation of facts and views, both of which occur in your programme, are so serious that repeat broadcasts of the programme, without amendment, are not in the public interest ... In fact, so serious and fundamental are the misrepresentations that the distribution of the DVD of the programme without their removal amounts to nothing more than an exercise in misleading the public."

Myles Allen, a climate scientist at the University of Oxford who signed the letter, said the programme "took a very cavalier attitude to science. There are important issues around climate change that the public should be discussing, but all this programme did was rehash debates that were had and finished in the scientific community 15 years ago."

This is where people need to focus their efforts. This "Great Global Warming Swindle" movie made a splash accross Canada's rightwing media, and now an oil exec in British Columbia is trying to argue it should be added to schools curiculum.

Bush and friends are happy ya'll are focussed on things like Alberto G. and Impeachment. Anything that allows action on global warming to fade away.

1. People world wide are waking up to climate change
They are seeing its affects. The more big business tries to hide it, the more cynical people are becoming.

We need to stay focused like Al Gore has. We owe it to those who come after us and that is tugging at our very core. It's called the instinct to survive, if not us at least the human race and what it needs to survive.

6. No trust in the UN
or the media which has hyped this issue

I see the elite building islands in Dubai and wonder why
I see chemtrails in the sky and ask why

Stolen elections and constant lies?
Why should i believe The government experts?
Have you watched the video?

7. You are woefully ignorant on the issue of global warming, as well as
the IPCC.

"No trust in the UN". What meely-mouthed nonsense.

8. What's your opinion on their graphs that lie about the temperature changes?
Like the one that marked a 1980 temperature as '2000', so it looked like the intervening 20 years of warming hadn't happened?

9. How about trust in the thousands of climate scientists?
Edited on Wed Apr-25-07 09:29 AM by Tempest
I find it interesting you left them out.

And apparently corporations are taking global warming serious, many are taking steps to mitigate the footprint they are making.

17. The earth is warming
If i said the industrial military corporate world secret government
was responsible to further their global agenda i might be wrong
and yet i might be correct.

In a report titled "The First Global Revolution" (1991) published by the Club of Rome, a globalist think tank, we find the following statement: "In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill.... All these dangers are caused by human intervention... The real enemy, then, is humanity itself."

19. The earth is warming, and human GHG production is the cause...
it's pretty much that simple.

No need to get "hysterical" or go live in the bushes with a loin cloth, just do your part and quit spouting nonsense.

Edited on Wed Apr-25-07 08:27 PM by Harper_is_Bush
so I figured it would be your take on them also. "Your" in my context was everyman.

Just what is your "part", anyway? Beyond quoting nonsense from Italian think tanks?

23. But the programme claimed it isn't warming
because it lied, and claimed a 1980 temperature as the 2000 one. So why are you recommending a video that lies about global warming?

11. Block its release? Hells no.
I've watched it. It makes a few good points, a lot of bad ones, and in the end simply prompted me to doublecheck a few figures. No biggie.

Banning media because you don't agree with it is the height of repression. The whole idea of freedom of speech is to protect unpopular speech.

12. Thanks for saying it.
I was going to say the same. When we start supporting suppression of free speech, we've jumped camp and might as well vote republican.

There's a lot of bad information in the world. It's the price you pay for freedom.

13. Blocking it is a bad idea

If we block it than we give them legitimacy. I say let them release it, and put out a DVD countering them. This DVD belongs in the same "science" as bigfoot and ufo's

14. I agree ... and we already have JUST SUCH a video...
It's called An Inconvenient Truth.

Although I certainly would support BLOCKING putting it on public TV here in the USA. I support blocking anything from our public airwaves where an obvious lie is represented as a documented truth. There's just too many stupid people that will be influenced by such things...

Gloves off, no tip toe-ing, calling videos like this bold faced lies made by corporations?

22. It's not worth the effort. The movie will be dismantled by UK watchdogs
there's already an investigation.

There are rules in Britain against making shows that put forth inaccurate/misleading information on issues of public importance. They've screwed themselves.
