BAGHDAD, April 25 (Reuters) - Nine people were killed and 16 others were wounded in an attack by a suicide bomber inside a police station northeast of Baghdad on Wednesday, police said.

The bomber walked into the police station in Balad Ruz, 50 km southeast of Baquba, the capital of volatile Diyala province.

Diyala is a region with a mixed population of Sunni Arabs and Shi'ites where U.S. forces are engaged in fierce fighting with entrenched insurgents and al Qaeda militants.

BAGHDAD (CNN) -- A mortar blast and a roadside bomb killed two Iraqi civilians and wounded eight others in Baghdad Wednesday morning, according to an Iraqi Interior Ministry official.

A mortar attack on a residential area in southern Baghdad's predominantly shiite area of Abu Dsheer killed one civilian and wounded five at about 9:30 a.m., the official said.

A roadside bomb explosion near a northern Baghdad fuel station killed an Iraqi woman and wounded three other people Wednesday morning, according to an Iraqi Interior Ministry official.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The U.S. military said on Wednesday it had
killed a senior al Qaeda in Iraq figure who it accused of leading
a cell which sent children as young as 12 on suicide car bomb
missions.

U.S. forces killed Muhammed Abdullah Abbas al-Issawi, described as
a security emir for al Qaeda in Iraq in the western Anbar province,
during a firefight with insurgents last Friday.

A U.S. military statement said Issawi, also known as Abu Abd al-Sattar,
was linked to a recent surge in the use of poisonous chlorine gas in
vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs), or car and truck
bomb attacks.

Iraqi civilian killed, 2 wounded in chlorine bomb attack
BAGHDAD (CNN) -- An Iraqi died and two were seriously wounded late Tuesday when a truck bomb laden with chlorine detonated on the western outskirts of Baghdad, a U.S. commander told CNN on Wednesday.

Maj. Gen. William Caldwell said the vehicle stopped at a coalition military checkpoint west of Abu Ghraib and then "self-detonated." The Iraqis were described as civilian volunteers who were working with the military. They were approaching the truck when it exploded.

It is the latest this year in a spate of vehicle bombs laden with chlorine gas tanks. Caldwell said about half of the chlorine tanks on the big truck exploded.
