WASHINGTON (AP) - Buoyed by a breakthrough with Libya, the Bush administration hopes Syrian President Bashar Assad will take a cue from Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and stop developing weapons of mass destruction.
But Syria has had a chemical weapons program for two decades and is "locked into keeping chemical weapons," said former U.S. Ambassador Richard Murphy, who met with Assad in Damascus three weeks ago.

1. Why would Syria give up it's WMD?
What's in it for them?

2. Colin Powell
Secretary Powell can hope for anything he wants. He may not get it. Syria traditionally does't take requests. As long as Sharon's tanks bulldoze Palestinian homes, Syria is more unlikely than ever to take requests.

It might better serve the cause of peace if Colin Powell cleared off his desk at State and walked out of his office for good. He should resign on principle. Why he ever took a job working for an inexperienced and inarticulate Texas governor is beyond me. Powell's lies last spring to the U.N. about weapons of mass destruction constitutes a betrayal of his office. He should have told his boss, "If you want this read at the U.N., go up there and lie to them yourself."
