Bush warns he'll veto spending bills

By DEB RIECHMANN, Associated Press Writer 37 minutes ago

CRAWFORD, Texas -
President Bush warned Congress on Saturday that he will use his veto power to stop runaway government spending.

"The American people do not want to return to the days of tax-and-spend policies," Bush said in his radio address.
...........

The measure — one of several annual spending bills that Congress began to consider this week — exceeds Bush's request for the department by $2.1 billion.

.......

House GOP conservatives have pledged to come up with the votes needed to uphold any Bush vetoes.

"I am not alone in my opposition," Bush said, stressing that 147 Republicans in the House have pledged to stand with him. "These 147 members are more than the one-third needed to sustain my veto of any bills that spend too much."

1. Oh, He's Talking About Congress Upholding Vetos
I thought he was going to start talking about the "silent majority." I guess that would sounded ridiculous.

So Bush is reduced to saying he can get most of the votes within his own party. Not exactly a position of power. It's not as if Congress is going to be passing universal health care or anything.

How thrilled will the 147 be when their asses aren't re-elected next year?

The only thing conservative about this bunch is their rational thinking apparatus.

9. * has the chutzpah of a madman
Could someone in Congress please make a chart of all the money this guy has "blown" on Iraq, wasted on no-bid contracts, and just plain can't account for; and compare it to what the Dems have "wasted." BTW. how's NOLA doing lately? How's Haliburton doing?

If there was ever an issue that the Dems should stomp him with, it is MONEY. He has a 29% approval rating for God's sake. He's fine with spending millions for a bridge for 23? people.

Please someone in Congress, step up. Funny how he's wasn't squawking about this before they gave him another blank check in Iraq.

Here's an idea. De-fund the DOJ until someone competent is put in charge.

when rethugs do it, it's called national security. Ironically, non of the money actually goes to security, only to line the pockets of Bush cronies.

22. The amount isn't the issue
Edited on Sat Jun-16-07 11:09 AM by sampsonblk
The issue is that this is a spending increase. Bush has already spent far far too much. Anything but a decrease in total spending is criminal, in my opinion.

12. "I am not alone"
Gee, we've come a long way from the days of "the will of the people" and "mandates," haven't we? It would almost make you wonder if Bush and his Republican enablers actually believed their rhetoric, or if they were just using it to dupe the gullible? Let's see if any of the gullible mouthpieces who so faithfully repeated those hollow words will realize how badly they were had and call Commander Bunnypants on his apparent hypocrisy.

I think we all know the answer by now.

16. I think this is a winner for Bush
Because few have paid attention to what's been going on in DC, Bush will claim he is protecting the public from tax-and-spend Dems. And sure enough, it appears that instead of screaming bloody murder, our side will just assume the role - with earmarks Bush can veto.

26. Know what's worse than Bush?
That America pretends he has any legitimacy whatsoever. That America endures the antics of a madman and war criminal just to keep up the illusion that there's nothing wrong with how our system of government is functioning.

When Congress doesn't have the means to oust a war criminal from the office of President then there is something undeniably wrong with how the system is working.

Rant and rage about not having enough votes because republicans refuse to vote against Bush - and that just highlights that there is something wrong with how our system of government is functioning. That members of Congress are equally as criminal and as corrupt as Bush, so much so, that they refuse to do anything about Bush because of their own complicity.

That the Bush administration can continually get away with their crimes and their lies - their smug arrogance, not entirely unfounded, that they will get away with it all.

People pretend Bush is just a bad President - something to be corrected with an election. But Bush didn't just happen one day in 2000 - he was a long time coming. Something was wrong with how our system of government was functioning even then - otherwise, Bush would have never been allowed to take office.

Bush isn't a bad President. He's so much worse than that. He's a wanna-be tyrant who sought the Presidency without a single thought to governing. He wanted to control... to pilfer. He wanted to open America up to the exploits of his cronies. Yet people still want to pretend.

Humpty Dumpty is lying shattered at the bottom of the wall and no amount of pretending is going to put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

Still - people want to pretend

And those people are the ones who stand with egg on their faces...

31. Bush has been pulling this stunt since 9/11.
Did anyone else catch what Representative David Obey (D-WI) said on Friday (yesterday) at a press conference about security spending? Obey says that Bush has been pulling this tough guy with a veto pen pose --my words, not his -- since directly after September 11th, 2001. Obey described a meeting he had at the White House with other House and Senate Appropriations Committee members after the September 11th attacks and the anthrax letters. Obey described how both GOP and Democratic members consulted the various security agencies -- the FBI, the NSA, etc. -- and put together a spending bill. Then they went to see Bush.

The president walked into the room, and before we could say one word, he said, "While I understand some of you want to spend more money than I do on homeland security, I want you to know, if you appropriate a dollar more than I've asked for, I'll veto the bill."

Obey went on to say how Republican and Democratic members responded to that, with a GOP senator pointing out that they weren't looking for a fight, and Obey pointing out that Bush was starting the discussion with a closed mind!

Obey also mentioned that increases in security spending are dwarfed by the tens of billions of tax cuts going to people who make over a million dollars a year.

Obey isn't the only one to have described Bush's strutting, preening, hard-nosed approach, or his indifference to the requests of security officials who actually have spent years looking at the threats. Bush would put us at risk for his vanity and for tax cuts for the wealthiest among us.
