Computer Failure Halts All United Airlines Flights

(CBS) CHICAGO A massive computer failure at United Airlines has halted all flights systemwide, according to industry sources and passengers sitting on planes, reports CBS station WBBM-TV in Chicago.

The reason for the failure is unknown and it is unclear how long the computers have been down. United Airlines and Chicago aviation officials were not immediately available for comment.

At O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, flights have been sitting on the tarmac for several hours.

One passenger, who identified himself as John Jones, emailed WBBM-TV to report that the captain of Flight 105 from Chicago to Los Angeles announced that United had tried and failed to start their computer system. For now, the flight is sitting on the tarmac rather than return to the gate.

The airlines really need to reinvest in their systems, but due to financial pressures, they just keep getting by.

My daughter returned from a school trip to Paris Saturday and came thru O'Hare via United--I can about imagine the messes something like this could engender.
