Democrats bash court diversity ruling
Source: AP

WASHINGTON - Democratic presidential candidates stood united Thursday night against the Supreme Court and its historic ruling rolling back a half-century of school desegregation laws. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said the conservative court "turned the clock back" on history.

(snip)

"Yes, we have come a long way, but we still have a long way to go," Clinton said. "The march is not yet finished."

Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware noted that he voted against the nomination of Chief Justice John Roberts, who wrote the majority opinion. He said he was tough on Roberts. "The problem is the rest of us were not tough enough," he said, seeming to take a jab at fellow Democrats. "They have turned the court upside down."

Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico, the first major Hispanic presidential candidate, said the next president must lead on racial issues.

All the Democratic candidates in the Senate opposed the nomination of Justice Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. Clinton, Biden and Obama voted against Chief Justice John Roberts; Dodd voted for his nomination.

3. Further analysis...
Edited on Thu Jun-28-07 10:51 PM by Aya Reiko
Comes from states that voted Bush twice:
Baucus, Mont. *
Byrd, W.Va.
Conrad, N.D.
Dorgan, N.D.
Johnson, S.D. *
Landrieu, La. *
Lincoln, Ark.
Nelson, Fla.
Nelson, Neb.
Pryor, Ark. *
Rockefeller, W.Va. *
Salazar, Colo.

Comes from states that voted Bush once:
Bingaman, N.M.

Comes from states that never voted for Bush:
Carper, Del.
Dodd, Conn.
Feingold, Wis.
Kohl, Wis.
Leahy, Vt.
Levin, Mich. *
Lieberman, Conn.
Murray, Wash.
Wyden, Ore.

* Seeking re-election in 2008

Conclusion:
It would be a waste of time to target anyone in the first group. And only Levin is seeking re-election in '08 in the lower group. If you want to target anyone, he's about the only one who would be worth the effort.

9. I don't blame the confirmers
There job is to bring to light views of nominees so the public knows what they are. In some cases bringing to light views they hold that are out of the mainstream. However, I feel that in the end their job is to vote yea or nea on if the person is qualified enough to do the job. The President has the right to pick who they wish if they are qualified.

Flame away but if you were president wouldn't you want to be able to pick who you want that was qualified?

6. Democratic debaters blast court's race ruling
Democratic debaters blast court's race ruling
POSTED: 3:08 a.m. EDT, June 29, 2007

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A historically diverse field of Democratic presidential candidates -- a woman, a black, an Hispanic and five whites -- denounced an hours-old Supreme Court affirmative action ruling Thursday night and said the nation's slow march to racial unity is far from over.

"We have made enormous progress, but the progress we have made is not good enough," said Sen. Barack Obama, the son of a man from Kenya and a woman from Kansas.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, the first female candidate with a serious shot at the presidency, drew the night's largest cheer when she suggested there was a hint of racism in the way AIDS is addressed in this country.

"Let me just put this in perspective: If HIV-AIDS were the leading cause of death of white women between the ages of 25 and 34 there would be an outraged, outcry in this country," said the New York senator.

10. Imagine not being allowed to discriminate based upon race,
or ethnicity?

And it was done with such noble intentions.
