BAM, Iran (AFP) - Two canaries saved two children buried under the rubble in the earthquake-hit Iranian city of Bam by attracting rescuers' attention with their singing.

"The two children, seriously hurt, were lying next to the cage. The rescuers, hearing the singing of their birds, succeeded in freeing the children after several hours of labor," the official news agency IRNA said Tuesday.

The rescuers rewarded the canaries by setting them free, IRNA said.

4. I didn't know about the temperatures
That doesn't sound good.

I thought this was a small bit of good news in a week of earthquakes and mudslides and such.

Maybe someone knows more about this than me but setting free domesticated animals who have never had to hunt/gather before might not be that great an idea. They might have just had no way to take care of them and sad to say but the birds aren't too high on the priority list right about now.

2. What a wonderful miracle
I adore canaries, beautiful, delicate birds with a lovely spiritually soothing song. A great story to start off the morning, thanks for posting. May the two children and the two canaries be safe and well.

Although, I'm not so sure setting caged birds free is such a good idea as they have been fed by a person and may not be able to find food for themselves, I'm sure the rescuers had the best intentions.

6. The canaries will be fine
Who knows what will happen to them. They may find another hand to feed them, or they may learn to fend for themselves. In any case, they will be fine and the story is quite nice. Canaries are beautiful, wonderful birds with a song that fills the heart. My canary, Bert, is singing as I write.

Imagine Bam, 50,000 dead, rubble and ruins. In the midst of it all, singing canaries and two lost children. What a miraculous story. Thank you, canaries, for saving your friends!
