Specter tells Gonzales special prosecutor may be needed to investigate firings
Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) - A prominent Senate Republican has told Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to consider appointing a special prosecutor to investigate the firings of federal prosecutors.

Gonzales, appearing before the Judiciary Committee, has been told by Pennsylvania's Arlen Specter that such a scenario may now be necessary because Bush administration officials have made statements that might have the effect of shutting down congressional supervision.

The prospect of a special prosecutor moves the controversy to new ground after nearly seven months of standoff between Congress and the White House. Democrats have been trying to find out whether the White House directed the federal prosecutor firings to influence corruption prosecutions in ways that might help Republicans.

16. He's had months for action, but all we ever get from him is
enough talk for the media to continue with his maintaining his moderate moniker.

21. Specter has gotten my hopes up before
He never follows through. I'd sure love to be wrong this time, but we have an old saying in Califoria. You may have it where you live, too. Fool me once...uh...shame on me. Fool me....You can't get fooled again.

7. Seriously, the minute Specter advocates necessary aggressive action...
You know that he's going to back down and let the scumbags off the hook once all the showboating is done. I'd almost rather he just get up and say, "We're going to let them skate."

He appears to aggressive in his questioning, but I think he is in direct contact with these idiots prior to these hearings.

18. This is so terrible. The majority of republicans are willing to let
anything at all happen to our constitution and to even establish a totalitarian government as long as they can be assured that there will be a position for them. No integrity, no morals, just greed greed greed.

22. Is this the same Arlen Specter who allowed Gonzo to testify without being
sworn in?

I bet Arlen Specter feels really stupid right now. And if not, we should do everything possible to remind him of how stupid he really is, so that he tries hard not to get caught being stupid again.
