Lebanon faces civil war if crisis unchecked: France
Source: Reuters

Saturday, July 28, 2007; 10:00 AM

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanon faces the danger of new civil strife if the 8-month-old political crisis is not resolved through talks soon, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said on Saturday.

Kouchner said he had made some progress in talks with rival Lebanese leaders in Beirut in a bid to persuade them to resume dialogue on ending the standoff between the Western-backed government and the Hezbollah-led opposition. ~snip~

Kouchner is trying to build on a tentative dialogue among Lebanese leaders whose representatives met in Paris earlier this month for talks billed as an attempt to break the ice between loyalists and the opposition.

Lebanese political sources and analysts expect little from his trip because of the complexities of the crisis and the external links of local players with forces like Syria, Iran and the United States. ~snip~

1. "forces like Syria, Iran and the United States"
We keep great company these day. It's funny how we complain about Syria and Iran's meddling while ignoring our own. Lebanon will be another one of our Commander Guy's great achievements. They went to all that trouble to prop up democracy in the middle east and then let Israel bomb it. They went to all that trouble to have Palestinian elections, and then refused to work with the elected government. Bush's policies have been a disaster, and the only option he's leaving the world is war.

2. Lebanese Army engages in house-to-house fighting

in heart of Nahr al-Bared

BEIRUT: The Lebanese Army pushed into the last pocket controlled by Fatah al-Islam militants inside the Nahr al-Bared refugee camp on Thursday. Lebanese soldiers engaged in "house-to-house" fighting with militants in the densely built camp, capturing new ground as army engineers worked to clear booby-trapped buildings.

They are still hunting down those bank robbers it seems in this silent, unreported, ongoing battle for Lebanon.

Guess no news is good news.
